Just purchased a Corolla S

child of wonder

Diamond Member
Co-worker sold us his 2006 Toyota Corolla S as he is going to lease a Civic Si. We've been looking for a nice 4 door car that gets better mileage than our Ford Taurus for a little while now and this car is just what we needed.

Does anyone else have a Corolla and could share any problems or issues they've had? Things to look out for? etc?

I had an older model and never had a problem. Do all the regular maintenance and she should run forever provided she hasn't been abused.

It has only 27k miles on it and he took it in for regular maint at the local Toyota dealer so that area is covered.

Good cars. Not as reliable as they were in the 1990s. Chances are the engine will run long after the rest of the car has gone to hell.

We have a 2004 LE. Just hit 94k. Regular maintenance has been done, of course. We're hoping for another 100k out of it.

Don't let some unscrupulous mechanic change your 'timing belt' You don't have one. They went back to chains in 2004.

I don't own one, but several of my friends do.

They are good, reliable cars that will get you from point A to point B. Not very exciting though.

That's quite a blanket statement... What exactly about the newer ones makes them less reliable? Better engineering? Better build quality? Better materials?

Materials quality has dropped considerably (across the entire Toyota line, not just Corolla). Many of the interior bits are rubbish. Things like door locks, window regulators, etc have a high fail rate. Don't get me started in engine sludge.

The dash rattled, the center console literally fell apart, glovebox wouldn't stay open, and the doors rattled with the stock speakers in my sister's '96 Corrola. It's all about how they're treated. She treated hers poorly. It ran like an absolute champ when she traded it for an Altima two years ago, but she didn't treat it well.

Corrolas are ridiculously reliable, easy-to-maintain vehicles. Congrats on the purchase. 🙂

Thanks for the input guys. We're really excited to have it. Our 1997 Taurus runs well but only averages about 19 mpg and has 141k miles on it. This Corolla is still under warranty and my co-worker agreed to sell it to me for the same amount he would get in a trade in so we saved a ton of money, too.

Plus it's an "S" so it looks nicer than a standard Corolla.

We're really looking forward to spending much less at the pump. 🙂

From the corollas I have been in and drove, the newer ones have much better materials and seem to be put together much better. I am not aware of any engine sludge issues on the 1ZZ engines. Mine purred along to 100k without any problems whatsoever. The only issue I had with the car was a sagging headliner in the back.

A corolla is probably one of the most simple and reliable vehicles ever produced, hence why it's the best selling car in the world. Congrats on the purchase OP.

If he sold it for 'trade-in' value then you probably got a great deal. You never get full value from a dealer out of a trade-in.

I don't know any particular issues for that model year. Good thing is, it's the 4th year of that generation so kinks should have been ironed out. I drive a 1993 Corolla with 209K miles on it.

You could post this question over at www.corolland.com.

GF drives an 06 corolla s and has about 53k on it now. Regular maintenance was done (like oil changes and tire rotations). Otherwise, nothing else has needed changing. I check brake fluid, trans fluid, and coolant type stuff. Brakes need changing now.

Other than that, the light or led behind the air circulate button went out back I don't know when and I didn't notice until like 40k, out of warranty.

The car retails for $15,000 and we bought it for $11,500 which is the same amount the dealer offered in a trade in. He really did us a big favor by selling it to us for that price.

Thanks for the link. I'll go check it out.
