Just picked up sz750n laptop, can't get WiFi turned on

this new sony laptop has the built in sprint wireless card. when i flip the wireless switch on i see the WWAN light turn on, but i want the WLAN light on instead. i pulled up the smartwi connection utility and whenever i click turn on in the wireless LAN part of it, nothing happens. the same window is showing that the sprint card is turned off but i can't switch it over to WLAN. its hard to describe, i guess if you have sony laptop you know what i am talking about.
 
From page 188 of the user manual,

Make sure Maximum Performance is selected for wireless adapter settings in the power options window. Selecting any other option may result in communication failure.
