Just picked up a Duron 650 - overclocking?

Hi guys

As title says - what sort of overclock can I get out of these chips?

I put it into my KT266a board (to test it) and I only got it to 110 FSB before it was unstable. Temps were OK, always below 49 deg. C

Machine was as the main rig in my sig, just with the Duron in place of the Athlon XP.

I have had 4 650 Durons, and they all would run @ 133 at least, 866 for the price of a 650 is a nice little boost. My best one would do 1066 on an Iwill KK266. YMMV of course

Been using my Duron 650 @ 866/133 stable for over a year. Crank down the a/c and it will do 910/140 reasonably stable. Using an Abit KT7A-Raid and a replica of a Swiftech MCX370, temps hover around 50C at 866.

Thanks IRJack! :)

Basically I wanted to find out if it was a good overclocker. I will be using it as a SETI node, and wondered if it was worth getting a decent mobo (with overclocking options) for it, or wether I should just buy a cheap one with no OC options.

Looks like I'll go for the former.

Any ideas why mine wasnt stable over 110 FSB?

My Duron 600 went to 1000MHz and that was when they were first released 1.5 years ago. So hopefully with better steppings etc you should be able to go over 1GHz :)

i had a duron 650 running at 1.01 ghz for about a year, with almost no stability issues (vnc would crash once in a while, but i thought the tradeoff was worth having a $50 ghz+ chip ):)

Hey Migroo :)

Lower the multiplier up the FSB as much as you can! :)

Try going for 133 if the board does it, it may not like running more than 110 until you get to the 1/4 PCI divider :)

Well the board runs 133 with an Athlon XP chip, so I figured that doing 133 for a Duron chip wouldnt be too much bother (ie the only thing overclocked would be the CPU, since everything else in the system is specified to run at 133. Strange :( I'll try it again.

Have you maxed the Vcore? Have you tried going directly to 133FSB instead of slowly ramping?

I'm running a Duron 600 @ 900 for a long while-

I think I'm running 100 fsb x 9 and the power is up there at like 1.8 ? Shoot I'm not sure.

I have a cheap Vantek HSF on there too, nothing massive like an Alpha and it works great.

Those of you who took it to 1 ghz, what HSF did you use?

I picked up a Duron 650 as soon as it came to market over 1.5yrs ago. Also had a Gigabyte 7ZX mobo at the time, and it was running at 112FSB. This board only offered FSB changes in set increments, and no multiplier or voltage changes. Now I have it running on a Abit KT7a and then I reliazed that it was unlock, and then I remember reading somewhere that early Durons and Athlons were manufactured unlocked. So now its running at 931MHz @ 7X133 FSB, 1.75v on a Thermaltake Volcano II.
