Just picked up a '98 Audi A4 ... tire & wheels recommedations ??

Page 2 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
EDIT: As you have no sense of humor about what most normal folks think about spending an additional $2000+ on new rims while the ones that came with the car are still round, I hereby retract my previous comment.

As a former 2001 A4 1.8T owner, I say you should be punished severely if you put chrome wheels on an A4.

Chrome and classy don't go in the same sentence together. And if you think we're negative, go over to Audiworld.com and post the same thing. You'll get flamed so fast, it'll make your head spin. I've been a member of Audiworld since 1997 (I have 98 A4), and I have yet to see anyone suggest chrome and not get flamed. Go get an Escalade or something.

Bah there are plenty of nice chrome wheels out there.

http://www.work-wheels.co.jp/wheels/index/equip/equip.html

Nice classic 5 spoke design.

You are getting mature responses. You should take the overwhelmingly negative responses to mean that the majority of people will think your chrome wheels look ugly. That said, do whatever you want to your car, it adds humor to my day.

I should look some up and link you guys ... (Unlike what I've got from anyone here)

I have to say that most of you guys are much more negative than I thought you would be.

I was hoping for a more mature responce ... my mistake I guess.

Maybe I should be a bit more clear ....

I could have bought any fricken car I wanted to... I was test driving benz's and almost bought the slk320 Kompressor .... very nice car.

So assumptions of being on a budget are unfounded ... I just like to get good deals..

And I made out like a bandit on this Audi .. so I bought it.

Furthermore ... yes I got the 2.8 Quattro.

I'm looking for tastfull wheels ... nothing pimpin' ... I hate that look.

I want CLASSY wheels ... 1"-2" bigger than stock I think will do just fine ...

I think going any bigger looks stupid and the ride gets worse... not worth it to me.

If you still want to just post stupid comments on whatever ... go to another thread please.

I'm looking for ACTUALL POSITIVE comments ... and LINKS would be a novel idea.

Thx guys ... I stay tuned.

Oh, and any fricken car you wanted and you almost chose an SLK320? WOW. I mean, WOW :Q That's like, the most expensive car ever. Man, you are rich.

Ok, recess is over kid ... go back to class.

I have a credit score of 780 and qualified for well over $200K

It's just not worth it to me ... I don't want that much car.
Sorry if that bugs you ... but I don't really care.

Again, I'm just looking for some classy wheels and apparently, this forum has gone SOO far downhill that I must go elsewhere to find adults.

Wtf do you think you got? People's objective opinions! What you WANT is only the opinions of people who agree with you. That you will not get here. The forums are doing just fine, thank you very much.

Please post pics after you put your new wheels on.

oh seriously you qualified for a payment on a car of about $3500 per month? or did you qualify on a $200k loan with you having to make a $190K downpayment? Based on typical car loan ratios of 20% Debt to income (they would consider up to around 40% without other debts) you are making about $200k (105k at 40%) per year, congratz!

someone looking for $200k cars does not go out and buy something at $12k....it just doesn't happen. Assuming you got a good deal on it, perhaps $9k.

Neither would they be looking for a 'good deal' on wheels with that much cash....

Someone buying a sedan usually isn't seriously considering a 2 door convertible either....did you look at minivans also?

A credit score without seeing the credit doesn't tell you much.

GG though.

Completely missed the point ... but thx for chiming in ...
The point was I can afford alot more than I'm willing to pay for my wheels ...

I got more CRAP than objective opinions ... read the fricken thread.

Put spinners on your ghotto car ...
Use rattle cans ... that'll rock !!

Objective ... thx but no thx.

And currently, I have not much of my own to agree with ... so that arguement won't fly either.
I was asking what would be some classy wheels and I got a whole bunch of kids that came back with neg comments.

It's very clear the forums, if they continue down this path ... are nothing like they once were.

Of course, you've only been here for just over a year ... so how would you even know...

Half the this thread is regarding a budget, which I honestly don't see the OP bring a budget into the original question. Who cares about his earnings or budget, I for one don't.
Im sure many of us could afford alot more than we buy, but thats not up for discussion. Once again, who cares. Bottom line is chrome wheels would look horrible IMHO on a Audi A4, and as for size, I wouldn't go any larger than a 18in wheel. If you do go with a 18in wheel, as someone posted above, it would look much better to either install coilovers or sport springs to adjust the ride height so theres not a huge gap. Good luck.

The point that all the crappers were trying to make was that chrome wheels are NOT classy, they're tacky. I'm sure they would have given you plenty of good advice if you just asked for nice alloy wheels, but you're asking for the impossible.

Edit: In other words, they're TRYING to help you by talking you out of making your car look bad.

their are tastefully done chrome rims (like those Work wheels linked above) but they will cost you $$$. I spent 3k on rims alone for my 18" staggered setup (not on anymore though).

For an Audi A4, 18" wheels will give the appearance of a larger wheel gap because of the smaller sidewall. A friend of mine bought replica RS4 18" wheels for his A4 and they look really nice but he is definitely going to do a suspension drop because the wheel well gap looks more prominent now. The nice thing about those RS4 type wheels is that the design goes all the way out to the edge of the rim, it make it look larger than they really are.

If you still want to do chrome, pick something that doesn't have much of a face on it. Chrome is a lot easier to clean than polished wheels and isn't as blingy when a wheel doesn't have much of a face.

Go on some audi forums.
Coming to a forum like this and expecting a slew of good answers is a joke.

Don't mind alkemyst he's a blow hard.

I never said I was looking at spending $200 ... again ... READ AGAIN B4 YOU POST.

No I was illustrating your statement. Do you seriously think anyone here thinks your BLinG-blINgIng enough to pull a $200,000 car (that you *qualified* for....who knows why they *qualified* you that high) and then chose a nearly sub 5 figure vehicle because you got a *great* deal?

Then people gave you advice and you slapped them for it including myself as I was asking your budget to give advice....it comes down to exactly that. Yet you come back saying with your pinky to your cheek "ahem, I qualified for a $200,000 car....money is no object, my nuts are stamped 24k".

You aren't going to buy a $500 wheel/tire package if you can afford HRE/Pilots at $1K per corner, yet almost everyone wants to waste other's time saying 'Money is no object', then we come back with a highend wheel and tire setup and then you suddenly have a *budget*. If you just wanted a 'YES' man, you definitely came to the wrong place. Personally I'd have gone directly to the Audi forums and viewed their galleries and posted up a few questions there. Chances are you already know the outcome asking for "Must be very bright chrome, and not going to peel on me." and "money is no object as I could buy a Ferrari, but I got a steal on this A4 Quattro" is going to get you off to a bad start.

According to what you claim you qualified at you should be pulling in around $200k per year at the low end of qualifying and $105k if you are stretching that 40% debt to income ratio.....on just the car....no other credit, mortgage or rent. It's highly doubtful, but made a good story.

You want help we are here for it....you got the answer the public here feels, if you don't like it don't tell us to change our ways learn to accept or don't ask the question.

You have a great credit score. BFD. I have a great credit score, too, but the difference between you and me is that I have cash in my bank account to back up my credit lineb so I buy my cars with cash. I bought my 1998 A4 BRAND NEW in cash, and my 2004 Lexus IS300 IN CASH this May. So don't give me this crap about you having money. Buying a used A4 does not indicate massive wealth.

Oh, and if you think I'm some dumb kid, I already graduated from UCLA two years ago, and am on my way to a Masters degree.

I find it surprising that the majority of the replies to your thread are telling you to NOT buy chrome, and yet when you find yourself outnumbered you resort to calling people immature. How very eloquent of you.

Look, it's better to have us flame you semi-anonymously over the internet than have people point and laugh at you rolling your bling-bling car on the street.

And if you don't think I know what I'm talking about, when I bought my car in 1998 I put almost $10,000 in mods into the car, and it was shown at the CEC booth at SEMA in 1998, so I think I have a little bit of credit in the aesthetics department when it comes to modifying cars.

But you know what? In the end, it doesn't matter. Buy what you want. We all have our opinions, and if you want chrome, go buy it. Check out tirerack.com or discounttire.com. They have some good selections on chrome (or non-chrome wheels). Also Audiforum has a links page with wheel dealers.

Understand this: The next time you try to back up an argument with your credit score, be aware that it doesn't mean crap. The fact that you're buying a used A4 (market value $12,000 or so, right?) tells us exactly where your money lies. If you're all that rich, why used? Why not a new A4?

Good luck in the future. Please don't come to our club events.

Hi again DingDing ....

I'm glad you're in school ... keep up the good work.
And congrats on buying with cash ... always the best way to buy anything ... no brainer.

I only brought up the credit cause I was gettin slapped for buying a cheap car, get cheap wheels crap.
And don't worry ... I won't be going to any dam clubs ...

THIS IS A COMMUTER CAR... I just thought it would be nice to make it "mine"
You know ... not so stock.

If had wanted a show car or club car, I would have invested more $$ on a car in the first place.
And most likely ... not an Audi A4.

I have to admit though, I've been looking at wheels on other cars driving around alot more lately ...
And some of the cheaper chrome wheels look like plastic ... so I'll give you that.

Furthermore, I was afraid that silver wheels would not match my silver car ... you know ... 2 different silvers....

But in looking at a place in Bellevue .. they have some that are very close to the same silver paint.

One in fact have a chrome ring and silver paint ... still not sure about that one.

Anyway ... I'm stll looking around ... and links are still welcome.

Although I may have to go elsewhere it would seem.

After 40-some posts ... I have only a few links to look at. *sigh*

But thx for all of your "input" ...

I have a little more to go on now...

What color is the car? I would say if it is black or a deep red then you could pull off chrome as long as they are pretty basic wheels, either that or a high polish aluminum...all of those here who say that chrome is not acceptable on an audi or any car for that matter are just voicing their opinions and you should take it with a grain of salt, remember that audi appeals to those who like understated elegance, not in your face showyness, however I feel that you can do a chrome rim that is understated as long as the color of the car will go well with it.

If your car is a silver car then something like those RS4 rims would be very nice, I think I know what you are talking about with the 20 spoke rims, much like the BMW 330s have as an option and I do like those alot as well, but only on the BMWs, I much prefer the new A4 five spoke design on the A4, or as someone said the S4 rims with the flat six spoke design, I would even go so far as to say the S4 style in chrome might look pretty good on a silver car as well as black or red, there will just be more upkeep in making sure they look good.

good luck

Understand this: The next time you try to back up an argument with your credit score, be aware that it doesn't mean crap. The fact that you're buying a used A4 (market value $12,000 or so, right?) tells us exactly where your money lies. If you're all that rich, why used? Why not a new A4?

Good luck in the future. Please don't come to our club events.

Things that don't make sense with your post....

1. you bought the A4 in 98 in cash which I will conceed is a good idea as the interest rates were very high at the time, however in 04 you bought an IS300 also in cash? for someone getting a masters it doesn't strike me as that bright considering int rates are so low on new car purchases and the money you spent in cash could have been invested and netted you a much better return than dumping it into a high depreciation purchase such as a car. Also you mention that you spent over 10k in modifications on the 98A4, I guess a fool and his money but personally I would not be bragging about this since one sees little to no return on heavy modifications to any car unless it is a classic, this is comming from someone who knows as I have dumped more than double that into a few cars and would never consider it again, I would just hope someone going for their masters is smart enough to know that before hand, or just has enough disposable income that they wouldn't have to brag about it on an internet forum.

2. You are essentially telling this guy that he should listen to the opinion of the majority, become just another sheep and do what people here tell him to do instead of that which he wants? hey if the guy wants chrome wheels let him get his wheels and maybe if you have something constructive to add then chime in, but if you are just going to bash him for his personal taste then what is the point of wasting both yours and his time with posting? makes little sense to me but then again you have the masters so it must be the right thing to do....

3. Also I seriously think you are overdramaticising this issue as no one will ever point to his car and laugh over chrome wheels, either that or it will only be high school kids and honestly who cares what they think anyway.

4. You harp on him for being immature for posting credit scores and then you have to retaliate by putting up not only your bankroll or high dollar purchases but also your level of education? who is worse...and then as icing on the cake you tell him not to attend your club meetings? really how juvinile. Sorry but while his response was arrogant it was in defense of his personal tastes, yours is just to be an a-hole....

Just calling it like I see it.

For the record it's usually only kids talking about cars as investments and how can they insure the $2k fortune they put in a stereo.

Spending $10, 20, 30k on car mods is usually done for the driver's fun...I know when I add stuff I am not thinking resale value of it. You try to recoup some on the sale if you can, but if not, that's the way that game goes.

As far as dumping cash into a car now rather than going for financing (assuming this high credit score) can be insurance rates being prohibitive....or some other secondary cost....if it's just to pay cash, right now that's a little idiotic since you can invest at a higher rate than a car loan would be with excellent credit.

Also too many a few thousand to several thousands into a car isn't noticed as a wallet impact.

I think the general consent around here is the follows:

1) NO chrome rims on an a4, you didn't buy an AMG S - class or an escallade

2) If you say "money aint a thing" and buy a 10k car, you'll come off as an idiot...

3) If you wanna get nice rims, go for 18x8 OZ Racing, BBs or Racing Hart. If you put 20" blingers on it, the result will be as in #2

I never said that .... it was in defence on a comment of a poster. (see above)

I said in my original post that I thought 18" was as far as I wanted to go. (see above)

Thx for the brands to look at ...
