Just paid $121.70 for car service

FVCK NO! WTF? That's $60.00 worth on average.

Edit: Balancing is $10.00 per tire, but why the hell would they need to be balanced? An alignment could be had for less than $60.00 on sale.

Yeah, alignment should only be abour $60. Hell, the shop down the street from me will do a 4 wheel computer alignment for under $100.

Here is the breakdown...

Tire rotation - $10
Balance - $14.50 x 4 = $58
Front end alignment - $49.50
Wheel weights - $1 x 4 = $4.20 ($.20 tax)

$121.70 total

Again, dealer or not?

They charged for wheel weights? Yeesh! Looks like the alignment was reasonable. You got ripped on the balancing and rotation tho. They should have rotated them for free if they balanced them all.

Balance was a little high, but nothing is way out of the ordinary. Never heard of additional charging for wheel weights while balancing though.

Whether or not it was a dealer, the price for all of that is not horrible. There are places that will not do an alignment without performing a full tire balance as an out of balance tire can destroy the alignment.

The exception being the $15 per tire balance. It should easily be half that, I think usually I've seen ~$20 for all 4.

why did you need balance? most cars don't need that unless
1) you got new tires
2) you ran over something you shouldn't have
3) you hit something you shouldn't have
4) a chunk of the rubber fell off as a result of 2 or 3
5) you got too much $$ in the bank.

Unless you were feeling a vibration going high speeds, you don't generally need a balance job. It's like the guys a Pepboys I was at last year telling a 16 yo girl she needed to have her distributor cap replaced in her Acura Legend. The car has electronic ignition -- there is no caps.

Reminds me of a Simpsons episode:

At "High-Pressure Tire Sales", Homer takes advantage of one of the coupon book's offers. His car is being inspected while on a lift.

Homer: Now, this wheel balancing is free, right?
Worker: Oh, you betcha, absolutely. Deh, uh, oh, uh-oh, wait a minute. These tires won't take a balance!
Homer: They won't?
Worker: Nah, nah, no, you hear that clunk? [knocks on wheel]
Homer: No ...
Worker: Well, that tells me you need four new tires.
Homer: Really?
Worker: Yeah. Legally, I can't even let you drive outta here on these.
Homer: Oh, please, can't you let me slide this time?
Worker: Gee, I'd really like to, but if my boss found out, I ... [the employee makes a quick hand gesture to his boss]
Boss: All right, what's going on over here? Were you gonna let this man drive out of here on unsafe tires?
Worker: No boss, I swear!
Boss: Ah, that's it, you're fired!
Homer: No! Wait! This is all my fault! Oh, if I could only turn back the clock and buy four new tires ...
[the two workers smile]

Later, Homer sits in the waiting room alone, next to a copy of Trout Fever magazine, a portrait of the man who had just scammed him (the "Customer Care Specialist"), and a broken TV. Cheerful yet annoying
Muzak plays. Suddenly, someone walks in.

Wally: Ooh, I know that look, heh. You came in for the free wheel balance and now it's costing you five hundred simoleans.
Homer: Six, with the tip.
Wally: Hey, you got off easy. I just came in to use the phone, and they got me for the whole road king package -- alignment, shocks, Armor All, stem lube ...
Homer: [laughs] Stem lube! Even I didn't fall for that. Although winter is coming.
Wally: Man, we are a couple of grade "A" suckers. [laughs]

You got shafted.

:|

It's funny, I went to this place because my dad has gone there for 30 years or so, and he said they'd do a good job. What a load of shiot.

You did not get shafted.

The cost was a little on the high side, but not out of line for what you had done. The alignment was actually pretty cheap, and in my mind offsets the high cost they charged for balancing.
