If you eat a lot of food... and then have diarrhea... Does that mean your body didn't process the food properly and therefore, probably didn't absorb much in the way of carbs, protein, vitamins, etc?

You might have food allergies, or if you've made a big diet change from what you normally eat, it might not be processing correctly right away.

Your body will still absorb good amounts of all of those things. But it certainly won't be retaining as much as it should. (I have food poisoning right now, wee!)

hehe, i only ask because the gf and I made a really nice, healthy meal last night and I get the distinct sense i didn't "retain" much of it... oh well :)

Did she get diarrhea too?
The type of diarrhea you get affects how much nutrition you get from the meal. Some people with acute/severe diarrhea may get little nutrition from the food, even losing nutrients and proteins. There are lots of causes of diarrhea. Once in a while might be caused by anything from stress, to allergy, to short illness, to simple unfamiliarity with the food and spices. Severe to acute diarrhea/gastroenteritis can be dangerous though and you should seek medical attention, especially if you have other health concerns. Chronic diarrhea needs medical attention as well.

Genhoth: what happened? I hope it's mild. I got salmonella poisoning about 2 years ago (contaminated salad from a deli). I was in a fetal position for 2 days =/ Had to stay in hospital on IV. Sever pain for 4-5 days, very uncomfortable for 7-8 days. I wanted to fire bomb that deli...
