Just ordered new MBP

That's for my SSD in the optical bay. 2011 MBP. Purchased near release date. I think Apple released a EFI update enabling the 2nd SATA port to do SATA 3 / 6 Gbit/s

MBP13 2011 on release has a SATA II optibay, which is what I have. The difference between SATA II and SATA III is physical, so a software update isn't gonnna change it. The EFI update was to fix issues with the connector I believe.

If you buy a MBP today, I believe all of them will have SATA III.

Yeah, I really needed the extra space at the time, so I had to go with a 500GB as it was my FCP machine.

But now, since it only works for a couple of months after a bake and FCP is... Hmmm... Becoming even more of a niche product now, I've switched off to using a Windows machine that I have 10.7 on and my iPad as a laptop replacement.

The release date on the MBP is February 24, 2011

Not that I'm saying that the EFI update is the thing BUT I'm saying that on my MBP which was purchase near release both SATA ports are SATA III

That's the same caddy I got. I put my 500GB Scorpio Blue in the optibay. I see that the "Negotiated Link speed" is 3Gbps. Did you ever get this fixed to change to 6Gbps?

EDIT: It looks like it is fixed. Except one of your SATA connectors is still negotiated at 3Gbps. Shouldn't matter though since you have a mechanical on that one. I got my MBP13 in Februrary, so I have SATA II in the optibay.

MBP 2011 Sandybridge and newer are the only MBPs with SATA III. However you won't see the benefit of SATA III unless you install a SATA III SSD.

It is a SATAIII link 'negotiated' at SATAII. Think of it like the gigabit ethernet port on the MBP. If you connect to a 10/100 switch, it will report that it has a 100Mb link.
