I got the standard model from apple.ca with student discount and the free shipping... they said it should ship on or before the 9th... think I will get it sooner? I can't wait to try it out... first mac ;)

Hi,

That should be an exact date hopefully. Some people I know have recieved their iBooks as promised. I know a guy who got his iBook 2 days before the "on" date.

BTW, hope you like you new iBook. I hope everything works out nicely for you. :)

Yeah I'm not sure what's up with amazon.ca. I went to a mac store the other day to try out the iBook and I was pretty happy with it :) I took a look at PC offerings but I couldn't come close for the price. I do hope it comes soon, the guys at the mac store said if they ordered it it would take 1-2 weeks and they didn't want to give me the educational discount, so I decided there wasn't much point to not buying from apple.ca.

I hope you enjoy your new iBook. I have never owned a laptop, and I really want one, but I ended up getting an eMac instead, because portability wasnt an issue at the time. Now I am debating on either getting a used iBook or my friends G4. I was looking at the 800mhz iBook, 640mb of RAM and I think a 30 gig HD for 699. I'm not sure if I can afford a new iBook at the moment, although I think I can cough out the extra dough for the new $999 model with a 1.2GHz G4 instead of the 800mhz G3.

I will see in about a month or two. Hopefully I can make up my mind. :)
Now I seem to be leaning toward my friends G4 or a new iBook. I do want more upgradeability options, so maybe the G4 is the way to go, and portability is no longer an issue at the moment. I will most likely get an iBook or even a Powerbook after the G4 purchase. I would like to have both a desktop and a Laptop

Thin Lizzy:

You could always get a 15" (or even 17") PowerBook, sell the eMac, and have both a desktop AND a laptop in the same system. ;)

You know, thats a pretty good idea. I may opt for the 17'' Powerbook and get the higher end graphics card, and I am all set. It'll be great, because its going to be a lot faster than my eMac. I love those big 17'' screens. :p

Thanks :) I think I'm going to have to add some ram though, it's quite good until you run out, and I know that with the caching it will be ever faster :) Does anyone know much about the fink project and unix tools? I already installed the XCode Tools and installed fink. I attemped to install XFree86 etc. but I'm not sure if it's working properly yet. (it all compiled and installed successfully) It shows up in finder, but when I run it and then try and use X forwarding in ssh to get stuff to show up, it says it cannot connect to the X server. :( (which type of display do I pick when I run X?)

Any general help or guidance with fink related stuff would also be greatly appreciated :)

Hi,

I probably wont be able to help you on this. Do you have an account with the Apple Discussions? If so, you should post here. I think its either the one that says Unix or Developer

Good Luck! :)

Go to the Panther "Unix" discussions as Thin Lizzy suggested ...there are some excellent Unix guys there that have helped me with esoteric problems many times.

And add some RAM....it greatly improves Panther performance.

Enjoy!

OSX rocks. Have you tried Expose yet? It's the best part of the entire OS.
And now, a shameless plug:
I have a copy of Microsoft Office for Mac OSX. 600$ new, lightly used (in original case) for 200$. I will take lower offers. I also have a copy of BGII for mac, if interested.

Glad you guys are all enjoying your new macs. I personally made the switch this summer for the new school year, buying a 1.5ghz 15" powerbook. It has been a very solid machine and hasn't let me down yet. I use it at minimum 6 hrs a day and it's on the go with me every day to class and the library. If you need another helpful site please check out www.macnn.com they have great forms not unline those here. :)

BTW yes Expose rocks... especially when you're running on a laptop! Makes even the small 12" screans very useful and very productive.

As far as I know, no problems with updates, just voids your warranty.

how would they know about it? You can always reset the NVRAM and that would remove the hack

Good point. How do you reset it, because I want to do this hack, but am worried abt my warranty :p. But, if the machine won't do the POST and you need to get it fixed, there's no way to get into the Open Firmware (assuming that's where it's reset) to fix it, right? I'd love to know how I can get away with it :D
