My brother just bought one about a week and a half ago. WONDERFUL camara. He also got another 1000 dollars worth of lenses, and a 1 gig flash card. He can take somewhere between 300-400 pictures easy. Some of the shots he has takes are AWESOME.

I used the Sigma 70-300mm lens. It is pretty cheap for a zoom lens; I think I paid $154 for it.

I also used this lens for the 3rd and 4th photo posted. I combined it with a reversed 50mm lens in order to achieve a higher magnification. The 3rd photo is the end of a pencil (metal thing eraser is attached to) and 4th photo is tip of a pen where you can even see the dried ink.

Been looking on Ebay for some lenses....I still have no idea what im looking at.

Would this be an ok lens to begin with? Series 1 70-300mm ? f/4.5? - 5.6 ? Compact, lightweight ? Accessory size: 62mm ? Aperture Range: f/4.5-22 ? Macro Ratio: 1:2.0x@300mm ? Minimum Focusing distance: 5 ft.

hi WA261,

Just got back from my vacation and i gotta tell you my investment on a 28-135mm lens is truly worth the price tag. Paid $400 for the 28-135mm EF IS USM lens and couldn't be happier. I took my camera to San Francisco and Vegas last week and it took sharper picture than the kit lens, and it fares better in low light too. Taken about 600 shots with the lens alone. I did not bring the original kit lens though since i don't like to carry too much and it's kinda inconvenient to change lenses every now and then. I'll post some pics later when i finished sorting my pics :)
I'm still experimenting with the lens since i got the night before i went on my trip :D

Depends on what you want.

300mm is some pretty serious zoom. Do you want to take pics of far away things like they're up close, or do you want to be able to take pics of things super close up(macro)?

I'm just a camera n00b, so don't take anything I say with too much importance... lol

i have the sony 717, and i already outgrew it. i am eying the 10D =P

anyway, here are some things to think about getting as you mature with the camera
  • spare battery (ies)
  • case
  • new lens (the one that comes with the kit does indeed suck)
  • external flash, it's more important than you think it is
  • filters... a simple UV or protection filter is a must, may want to move on to polarized (linear will work fine) in the future
  • more memory is always good, especially since CF is the cheapest
