After reading that Anandtech article on Far Cry 1.2 using PS and VS 3.0, am I already going to fall behind the tech curve? I know there wasnt much of an increase, and it was only when dealing with lighting, but I feel that the ATI cards produce a better image quality (albeit not extremely obvious).

Should I cancel my order? I got a great deal on the X800 XT ($420.35 SHIPPED!, it was $392 before tax)

Discuss, please.

If you plan on keeping it for a while (greater than 9 months) than you may indeed be behind the curve as more games come out with PS3 or current games come out w/ PS3 patches.

But you got a good price on a great card so it's a tough call. It would cost you at least $100 more to get a geforce 6800 ultra; but you could get a 6800 gt and hope to overclock it a bit.....

I wouldn't worry about it. You're card will be very fast for a good while to come. The only way it will really matter is if you're obsessed with benchmarks.

They are not going to alienate the X800 series in new games.

Actually if you look at the benchmarks closely, the x800 xt pe is on top of the 6800 ultra even with the SM 3.0. What the review leads you to believe is that nvidia is always on top because they are using the 6800 ultra extreme. That isnt fair is it? That card is not going to be officially released from nvidia and all it is is an overclocked 6800 ultra. If you rebench those with an overclocked x800 xt pe im sure you will get VERY similar benchmarks.

Im going with the 6800GT this time around. The only problem is getting a hold of a place that sells it.

Why wouldn't companies backed by nVidia alienate the X800 series? Did companies backed by 3dfx care when it was software or Glide only? Did the guys who made Giants care that 3dfx didn't have bump mapping? Etc..

I think this viewpoint may be shortsighted. I would expect nVidia to try and influence all TWIMTB games to run better on their hardware, it's their money, and I doubt they care about ATI other than maybe wanting to buy them?

If this theory were correct, then it would be happened today already amungst the FX and Radeon cards. Hell, PC developers are hurting enough for units sold when compaired to consoles gamers...why would then alienate another graphic platform?

UT2k4 runs better on ATI hardware. So either they aren't trying or they are failing.

Yes, anyone relying on the Anand results should look at them again as the graphs have been redone. SM 3.0 does boost nVidia performance but ATi usually still has the edge.

The author enabled AA in Nvidia's control panel, and failed to do so in Farcry's ingame settings. Hence the 6800 numbers were highly inflated. He updated his test now, even with SM3, the 6800 Ultra got beat by the XTPE. And that's in Nvidia's demos. On Anand's demos, well, the 6800s got owned.

My question is how someone could make this mistake, unless he runs the demo, walks off, then comes back when it is done. Also, is anand still using that borked underclocked XTPE? His XTPE results are consistenly below firingsquads by 1-2 fps each time.
