Theoretically, but in practice for tablet type duties... well you might look at how netbooks work in reality vs ipad.

LOL and you were saying that my processor is dog slow?
Oh right, because it's needed to be able to run so much more than your iphone apps. 😀
Yeah and it runs win7 perfectly fine. You still haven't mentioned a single thing that a person would need with an ultraportable tablet that a 1.5GHz Pentium-M(Dothan) can't handle. Even 720p HD videos run perfectly smooth.

My netbook with Win 7 Pro has no problem running Visual Studio, a couple of instances of Word 07, Putty, and Filezilla plus a half dozen tabs in Chrome simultaneously. Good luck doing that on an iPad, assuming they eventually enable multitasking and release apps comparable to those.

My desktop does all of those things better than your pitiful little netbook. My macbook does all of those things better than your pitiful little netbook. My iPad won't have to do any of those things because that's not what it's for. Get that through your thick skull, and maybe you'll begin to understand the significance of the iPad. It's almost funny seeing fools like you fumbling around trying to find reasons why the iPad sucks. Everyone knows this.

oh you regular person you with your visual studio😛 i'm sure if your netbook was a windows tablet you'd be doing some amazing things in visual studio with your fingers though right?

but seriously man, if you are really programming and running a load of tabs, don't pretend its anywhere near optimal running on a netbook.

And my tablet can do everything the iPad does, and so much fucking more, including running all your iphone apps, not that I'd ever want to.

Oh and if you just so crave the dumbed down interface of the ipad, I can run ipad too.

How exactly are you running iPhone or iPad apps in Windows 7?

Good price for a tablet, albeit an old one.

All points about the iPad aside, there is currently no desktop OS that is well suited to a tablet, especially not a multitouch tablet that doesn't use a stylus. With the stylus, maybe, but using a stylus on a convertible tablet has always felt like a bit of an edge case, I used one at school and just couldn't get as much done as I could using keyboard/mouse. They are cool, and it is interesting to know that there are systems at that price that can run 720p. I would have expected it with a higher res though, I thought Thinkpads of that era always came with higher than standard res. My 12" PowerBook has the same res, but it cannot playback 720p.

Your tablet running iPad apps is a joke. It's like taking the Prius and molding a plastic Ferrari body onto it, and then claiming it's the same. Here's a hint: it's not. Everyone knows this.

lol only except it's more like running a ferrari like a prius.
Sure it's not the same.. it's a helluva lot better.

It has squat for tablet software.
are you seriously comparing this
x41ibmthinkpad1.jpg

with an ipad?
you have theoretical that don't deliver in reality, which has always been the issue with competition against apple devices.

Never mind the intel gma 900 in that 5 year old laptop can't run squat. The games on the iphone have been impressive, street fighter looks amazing, no matter how clever you are with programming on the x41 you won't get anything like that, and the ipads graphical capabilities will probably be as impressive as the iphones.
03_03_doom.gif

9fps with all settings at low quality!
the 30fps is playing the video trailer😉
http://arstechnica.com/hardware/reviews/2005/10/thinkpad-x41.ars/5

the old laptop has the theoretical ability to do some of what the ipad can,but guess what, it never will, no ones going to bother to support it.

lol. No. You're wrong. The iPad is lightyears ahead of your "tablet". lol. It's a testament to your foolishness that you're still trying to argue otherwise. Do you see how many people are anticipating the arrival of the iPad? Did your little "tablet" have the same media coverage? No. It didn't. You know why? I'll tell you why: your "tablet" is just another latop amongst thousands. There's nothing remarkable about it. There's nothing special about it. Your "tablet" is a shining beacon of mediocrity. Hold it high, and be proud, astroidea. Be proud to have a completely unremarkable bit of technological history.

lol I liked how you linked a shitty pic of an X40 non tablet.

More like this..

Are you seriously arguing that ipad has better games than what my GMA900 can run? UT2004 looks helluva lot better than any ipad game.
There are hundreds of classics at the level of UT2004.

Plus don't even forget that I'm spending $370 for my tablet as opposed to $700 for your 64GB ipad.
For $700, I can get the X61 tablet with a core2duo and I can put in an intel X-25M G2 80GB hard drive and load it with 4GB of ram.

uh c'mon... you should know by now that anything with the logo of a half eaten apple will sell like hotcakes and get tons of press coverage.
Don't even try to argue that the ipad hardware is anywhere near as robust or fast as my ancient used tablet off of ebay. Sure it looks purdy.. for me, I'll take functionality over form. I guess most apple fanboys can't say the same, a la one fucking button mouse. 😀

ut2004? am i supposed to be impressed. it runs doom 3 at all lowest settings at 9 frames per second in the review. you betchya the ipad will have better games than what your x41 can run. what do you have besides ut2004? anything newer can't run on it, never mind in tablet mode, how are you playing a wasd game on an airliner anyways?

nice mockup picture, but notice the screen is blank, they'd have a hard time showing what it would actually be useful for.

(1) I'm not an Apple Fanboy but don't hate them either
(2) TheFlyingPig is an Apple Fanboy
(3) I don't want or ever will get an IPad but I have an Ipod Touch that I really like.

Even so I don't think your argument necessarily holds water. Yes the IPad will/would sell anyway if it sucked or not. I don't think the IPad has a proper demographic beyond apple Fanboys. However I don't think it's just a piece of garbage and would be willing to bet that it can do everything your used laptop can do and more. One thing you have to take into consideration though is that you are comparing apples and oranges. Your notebook runs windows the IPad runs the IPhone/IPad OS. The former was really designed for use on a desktop of greater power but can, granted, do more general work. The latter is more constrained but was designed specifically to work on this kinds of hardware and has a UI designed specifically for a small device. With the proper apps and an external keyboard you can get quite a lot done on a device like the IPad/iPhone etc... and at a very speedy pace!

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAH! Now I know you're desperate! You've pulled out the 'ol "one button mouse" argument. Weak. That argument has been invalid for the past decade. As for you claim of taking functionality over form, the iPad is both, like all Apple products. The iPod has the best user interface of any media player. The iPhone is the best smart phone available. The iPad will be the best tablet available. There is do doubt about that.
Heh, a month from now you'll be sitting down somewhere and someone with an iPad will come and sit next to you, instantly turn on their iPad and start browsing the web, while you sit quietly waiting for your pitiful little "tablet" to boot up. By the time you open your web browser the iPad user would have finished reading their article, played a game, and checked their email. Do you see how pathetic your "tablet" is? Do you see the truth now, astroidea? It's time for you to open your eyes. Just return that garbage and get an iPad. Free yourself. Everyone know this.

True, but you missed the part where I pointed out that my tablet runs ipad simulator. OK it doesn't have multitouch, but it's fucking half the price, in which if I wanted the multitouch, I could get the X61 tablet for the same price as an equivalent ipad.

Not too bad of a deal. How big is that thing though? Looks almost 2" thick. Probably weighs 6+ lbs?
lol I like how you conveniently glossed over the weight that I stated in the OP.
X series is thinkpad's ultraportable line. While it's bigger than the 9.7" ipad, it's not exactly a bulky machine.

Sorry wasn't trying to be snarky or anything. I looked it up and 3.5 lbs at 1.14" thick. Not bad at all!

No kidding, my desktop does everything better than my netbook too.

You right the iPad isn't for doing real work on the go, it's for looking like a tool while you hang out at Starbucks.

bit out of touch now aren't we.

thats about the weakest arguement around, my tablet runs the ipad simulator😛 yea good job, i'm sure you can multitouch your way around that sim using that touch screen as well😛 not..

what can it actually do, not much other than to imitate a rather weak netbook without modern gpu. and at 4lb with that battery that sticks out, its big and unwieldy as well. zero warranty, and with additions its cost just kept creeping up far past the initial cheap deal price.

the simple fact is you rehabbed a 5 year old laptop into a reasonably ok netbook, but its tablet functionality is pretty much a useless novelty. as with the folks that bought those when they first came out, they eventually asked themselves wtf is this pen for, that mode of use was totally pointless as implemented, and they didn't come back.
