free next day shipping! so excited :D
i wonder what i will do with my trusty G1...i'll keep it around in case i just hate the lack of physical keyboard i guess.

question: does it come with a screen protector / plastic film already on the screen? my g1 had one which i've kept on it for a year now. not as thin as a proper screen film, but protects just as well, and it was already on the device...

No it doesn't.

I recommend getting a case/matte screen protector from dcmugen on ebay. Same ones as all the other stores are selling at a markup for the true price. You can get a case and like 5 protectors for like 12$ shipped.

I got mine Monday and am LOVING it so far. It's like Christmas when you open it up! :)

The screen is gorgeous and it's just blindingly fast compared to all of my previous phones (which weren't anything special, to be fair). Customizing it has really been fun and I am still discovering little apps that give me new or improved functionality.

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to the cell phone thing (the last phone I owned was probably around 1997 or so). I just picked up a Droid about a month ago and have been enjoying it so far. When I saw the Nexus One, I was a bit confused about what the difference really was between the two. They look to be fairly close to the same thing... can anyone tell me what really is the difference? I think they have the same display, use the same OS, the Droid has a physical keyboard (which I don't care for, I just use the virtual one). But, like I said, I'm not up to date on all the phone stuff, so I was just curious about what the difference between these two device are. Thanks.

Droid has a physical keyboard and comes with a larger micro-SD card. Nexus One has a better screen, has a lot more powerful hardware under the hood, no physical keyboard. That's about the only difference.

For the same size, the Droid has a little higher screen resoluion (848x480 compared to 800x480), and has a 16GB SD card as opposed to 4GB. The Droid 600MHz and the Nexus One has a 1GHz processor (for apps currently, I think this means very little, maybe in a year or two there will be a noticable difference). As said, Droid has a physical keyboard which makes it a little bit thicker and heavier. Droid has gorilla glass (very scratch resistent) and I do not believe the N1 has this. The rest of the differences should be rectified in the coming months (OS versions & carriers).

I have one and it's an awesome phone. There are some issues with it but I wouldn't give it up for anything. The market place is much smaller than Apples but the apps are generally of high quality.
I used to hate cell phones but this does so much. I have my work email, gmail, navigation, japanese dictionary, games and a whole lot more in one place and I find myself frequently using it.

I ordered 2 phones last Friday afternoon about 2 PM Pacific. I was e-mailed shipping confirmations at about 11 AM on Saturday, and according to my tracking the packages were picked up by FedEx about 2 PM that day in Indianapolis. I received them Monday. Also, they deliver them with signature required.

Dear god. Did you guys pay retail?

I would enjoy the Nexus One, but I can't justify spending $500+ on a phone that will be upgraded in 2 years.

I paid retail, yes, because it allows me to stay on my ancient grandfathered T-Mobile family plan with very cheap data. I looked at the costs over 2 years and (for me) it was actually WAY cheaper than getting something like a Droid or iPhone because I get to stay on my plan. There's a chance they'll cut off my data at some point and force me to go to their new structure, but until then I'm going to ride this gravy train. :D

Even if you're a new T-Mo customer, buying it at the retail price isn't a terrible deal. Yes, the cost is front-loaded because you have to spend a bunch on the phone, but T-Mo has pretty cheap "Even More Plus" plans for non-contract customers. The total cost over a 2 year period ends up being competitive with other high-end smartphones, with the additional advantage of keeping you off-contract.

My friend who's a long time T-Mo customer, did the same as you. Enjoy the ride!!

I want one of these too, but I'm waiting on the Verizon version. T-Mo while great here, is horrible in NC which is becoming my second home. Not to mention, that I can't get a discount with them, like I can with Verizon.

I got mine used. The guy who bought it originally kept it for only 3 days. I also got it for $420 so that was a good deal. Swapped my sim from the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and I'm in business.
Now to unload that Xpressmusic..

I'm curious, does T-Mobile offer free visual voicemail? I was considering a Droid, but I don't like Verizon's data plans and add-on fees at all. T-Mobile intrigues me since I would save over $20 per month compared to my iphone plan.

Yes, there's a free app in the marketplace and you just have to enable the service online or through customer service. Looks like they're also rolling out some related additional features soon: http://www.tmonews.com/2010/02/t-mobile-launches-voice-plus-beta/

I saw that earlier today and tried it out for myself. If I intentionally press my hand up against the entire lower part of the back of the phone, I can make the 3G signal drop by as much as 15-20 dBm which would put you on EDGE in most cases.
However, I have to TRY to do this. Any natural way of holding the phone when browsing, typing, or making a call will leave your hand over, but not really touching, that area. The phone is a flat rectangle, so it's actually difficult to completely press it into your palm or fingers to completely cover that area and block the signal.

When I do hold the phone normally, I still see a drop in signal strength, but it's much less pronounced - closer to 5 dBm and never more than 10. In other words, I can intentionally replicate the issue shown in the video, but for the most part I don't think it would be nearly that much of a real-world problem for me. Still - it's mildly annoying to know this is the case and I am glad that I'm aware of it, though.

Any other owners wanna try it and see if they come up with similar results?

ETA: in general, I get really good reception with the phone. Much better than my old BlackBerry, and I don't have any other issues with the 3G reception.

on my g1, i can force it to hang on to 3g by setting the options on that screen to "WCDMA ONLY" instead of "WCDMA PREFERRED"

Yep, as I suspected originally, it's an antenna issue, no one has had these kind of problems for years, I remember when reviews had RF sensitivity values, and how Nokia was usually the best, and I can imagine HTC not testing with human hands to discover this is an issue...

Google has wads of $, and to keep their credibility, they really need to issue a recall and replace these phones with a better antenna...
