Never ran more than two and don't have room for more than two in systems because of storage controllers. Of course I do have a system that can use all PCI-E slots (seven) but that is dedicated strictly to Tesla.

I get things in pairs so when I ordered two cards I got four. But that's OK too. :)

Wow! You good sir have too much money!!! Do you use Tesla for your job or you have a Tesla system for personal use????

CPU is not as much of a factor at 2560x1600 though. Just turn on the eye candy. (and watch that electric meter spin!)

it is a factor when dealing with very high end cards in sli. just because it is 2560 doesn't magically mean an E8400 would suffice with that kind of gpu setup and overhead.

 @ 8400. That is all I have to say about that.

1kW PSU would certainly be minimum comfortable with these cards. They make my AX1200 scream but that's another "feature" of this PSU that's unrelated. I think it's funny actually but some people are VERY annoyed by coil whine.

OP RE: your 5970...

Did you take it apart to see if something was impinging on the fan wheel? If it sounded like a wire rubbing (the boys would tape poker cards on the forks of their bicycles so they made motor noises within the spokes when I was little) that is certain grounds for tearing it apart. ;)

you are going to need a better psu if you oc those gtx580s.

Agreed. With that much ram, and that big of an overclock on the CPU, that PSU is either going to not be able to power that system at all when the GPU's are heavily stressed, or it will have a very, very short lifespan.

Sweet setup. One of those Corsair 1200W PS would finish it off ;)
Enjoy the 580s

Been looking at the power supply issue. I found some threads about a Corsair 850w being enough for a 480gtx SLI, which draws more power than the 580's. I looked at anand's review of the 580's and it doesn't specify the system specs they used for their power consumption. I know if i stuck with the PS i got i'd be cutting it close to the 850 watt limit. But I've also read that corsair's limits are pretty conservative.

Might just do some measurements myself and see if I need to buy a new PS.

the 580 uses just as much power as the 480. again its real simple because even a stock gtx580 can exceed 250 watts. you have multiple drives and a highly oced i7 so even if you didnt oc the 580s you would pull over 700 watts under full load. factor in ocing the 580s and you are looking at over 800 watts easy during full load.

anandtech says right there on the test setup page that they use a 3.33 i7. the difference between 3.33 and 4.2 on an i7 is around a massive 100 watts according to toms. anandtech got 850 watts at the wall with their stock 580 sli and stock 3.33 and single drive setup. again factor in another easy 200 watts more for ocing the cpu and gpus and you are asking for trouble during full load.

Alright, you convinced me. I just purchased a Corsair 1200AX and I'm having it shipped overnight so I can play with everything tomorrow (Amazon Prime FTW)

Wasn't sure if i should go with the 1000w or the 1200w but I made the mistake last summer not buying enough so I'm not gonna make that mistake this time.

good deal and I was going to say that 1000 would be the minimum to go with that setup. I guess just sale that 850watt psu unless you have another pc that needs it.

When you get your AX1200 running can you run the winsat tool and let me know if your supply sounds like it's full of canaries?!
