Just one more step on the road to independence.

As you know, I got a job working in a real estate office. (Which I very much enjoy.) Relying on my grandmother to let my mom use her car to get me to and from work and to and from the store and to and from...(you get the idea) has been far from enjoyable. (Though I appreciated that she loaned us the car when we needed it.) I wanted needed freedom.

Today...today was a very happy day. I finally got a car. It's an older car, but it's new to me. It runs well and it belonged to a little old lady and has 77,000 original miles on it. It's a 1989 Eagle Summit.

Many people, I'm sure, take shuffling themself to and from work or to the store or to go hang out with friends, for granted. I know I used to. However, I no longer do. I was so unbelievably happy that it brought me to tears.

Slowly, but surely, I'm gaining back my independence. What a wonderful feeling it is.

(Reposted to my Myspace--yeah I have one of those and probably my forums and whatnot. 🙂 )

How old are ya?

Cars are fun, but irritatingly expensive to run, and 'nice' little older cars tend to shower you with expensive repair bills after an arbitrary number of years of faithful service 😉

I'm 30 years old. However, I was in a LTR out in Virginia. When I broke up with my fiance, I left with some boxes and my dog. So gaining back my independence has been a very important step in moving on and moving forward.

Yes cars can be fun but the expensive to run part....well that depends on the car, although being American I guess hzl eyed grl is screwed cause American cars suck, but my trusty 86 Falcon probably owes me in the past 3 years or so, maybe $150 for repairs that it needed (A blown head gasket that leaked water into the oil).

I've own many Falcons and apart from the couple that I rebuilt from the ground up, I've never had huge running costs from them...just a pity the same could not be said about the couple of GMH cars that I've owned *cough* 1987 VL turbo *cough* 6 grand in less than 3 months *cough*

It all depends on the car.

The car is a bit old... but what can I say, I've bought 5 years ago a car with similar mileage (but it was just 12 years old).
Good luck with the new car, and I know how good it is - I almost slept in the car the first night I've had it 😀

Picking up and moving on by yourself is hard to do. You should be proud of yourself. 🙂

Thank you. It's been pretty damn difficult, but I'm learning that I can do it. Plus, now that I'm working in real estate I'm hoping that I can find my own place soon. (Renting, for now.)

As far as the Eagle Summit....It's made by Mitsubishi. Just like the Mitsubishi Eclipse is the same as the Eagle Talon the Summit is some other form of Mitsubishi. (It even has some Mitsubishi sticker on a window on the car and I'm not sure where else.)

Every car I have ever owned was by far cheaper to run and maintain as it got older.

One step at a time.

Good for you, hzl eyed grl, starting to reclaim good feelings about yourself.

We're each endowed with vast reservoirs of inner strength to deal with problems, far beyond what we usually realize.. & that includes you.

Thanks, y'all. 🙂 I have a question for you car people. If the car hasn't been driven all that much over the years, is it possible to have a slight burn-type smell after you drive a bit because it's burning off all the dust and crap off the engine? I smell a burn-like smell after driving and it isn't an oil smell or electric smell or transmission smell.

Thats pretty common when you turn on the heater after its been off for awhile, or if there is a dead person in the back seat so you might want to rule that out. Was this little old lady a widow by chance?

You could probably sell the dog for $30, at least.

Just throwing it out there.

If it's sat for a while, it could be an animal roasting under the hood. I'm serious about this one. I've seen weird things happen to cars that sit. One car I started had a burning smell, and it turned out to be grass burning. The grass was from a house that mice built.

Congrats on the new car and the job.

Even if the car has been treated right still plan to spend a few hundred within the next few months for a tuneup and things like filters, belts hoses etc.. Then maybe look into a transmission flush, spark plugs, and tires pretty soon depending on frequency of service.

no disrespect but that is a lot of wasted money. Old car, repair when broken.

Fvck you. I don't find that amusing in the least. She's one of the only good things that I got out of the relationship.

doze - Yeah, I definitely plan on that. The front tires are brand new, but maybe some new back tires to go along would be nice. lol Also, I'll probably need new brakes. Most of the belts look good and I'm going to get a tuneup and see if there's anything else that needs to be done.

Oh come on, it was a joke. I'm sorry to hear that your sense of humor has died- my condolences.

I'm a dog person, I love dogs. But I'm not one of those nutty Peta-type people that can't take a joke about animals.
