Just offered Windows 10 via update on one pc but not the other

My main rig just received a notification offer of Windows 10 in the taskbar on the right side. My other rig hasn't. I tried doing a 'Windows update' to see if it would be offered that but it hasn't shown up. Is there a service.msc that should be running in order to receive the update?

EDIT: both have received the update notice, just waiting now

I just saw the same thing. My laptop (which has an older install of W7) just had it offered, but my W7 desktop hasn't had it offered. Maybe they're doing a phased rollout?

Side question - if I did accept the 'update', will my programs keep working or is it going to be like a fresh OS install?

Odd... Don't got this on my 8.1 system.
Must have been one of the KB updates that are optional, and I refused to install it.

Just got it also. Right clicking on the icon in the taskbar gives:

Get Windows 10
Reserve your free upgrade
Go to Windows Update
Get to know Windows 10

I went and ran Windows Update and nothing came up there (I did it last night so I was pretty up to date) except a definition update.

Don't have time to experiment so will let others take the plunge... :)

Good Luck! :D

Ditto here.

"Reserve the update," "get confirmation."

As long as I needn't decide or install it for a while, or I can use one of my systems for a guinea-pig . . .

I don't want a spastic upgrade. Stupid MS. Clean install ONLY. Do they never learn? I want a fat old .iso I can reinstall at will. This is why I only buy OEMs.

I'm with you there. Anyone else also get an uneasy feeling about the offer? Like there's something in that update I'm NOT going to want? :hmm:

I think they will do this when the day comes (iso download), but you have to remember enthusiasts like us are in the minority. Most people just want to do a couple of mouse clicks and be updated.

Just got notification in 8.1 this morning. Update will be available on July 29th. It will download automatically, you have a choice if you want to be notified when it's ready to be installed and you can choose to install it or not.

Remember, it's free for the first year. There is lots of time to to make this happen.

I've just got the update prompt on my Win7 system as well. I prefer to wait until they've confirmed that they're not planning on foisting a subscription system on us :)

Also, what's the plan, is Win10 going to go straight from a "technical preview" to release?

Just got the notification on both of my 8.1 gaming PC and laptop,as to technical preview well there are quite a few builds of Win10 out as you probably know and Microsoft will decide on RTM build.
There might be a few more builds available then Microsoft will decide which Win10 build to optimize for RTM IMHO.

As to subscription that is not what they are doing,if you don't install the free upgrade to Win10(for 7 and 8 home users) within the first year then you will have to buy Win10 if you want to install or upgrade your OS to 10.

I think they are just trying to get people to upgrade from their old 7/8 OS ,making it free if you upgrade within the first year is good way of doing that.

I've no issues with 8.1(very solid for me) but looking forward to Win10.

Side note: as to the 29th July release ,if that is true(ie no delays etc) then Microsoft probably have a very good idea on which Win10 build they'll probably go with.

I've seen it on my desktop and tablet and have confirmed both and will also do it on my laptop when I boot it next time.

This upgrade notification doesn't apply to the Enterprise version of Windows 7 or 8, right?

Another potential issue I have with this is that three of my Windows 7 licenses are tied up in a single retail 3 user Home Premium "family pack" (one key). How does that work? Would I be able to get three Windows 10 licenses? What about if I want to keep using two of those licenses with Windows 7, but upgrade one machine to Windows 10?

I'm in that boat as well. Hopefully there will be clarification soon, and more hopefully it allows the last thing you said there.

I'm pretty sure I saw in the announcement that you have the option to not install the upgrade. I confirmed my reservation for my laptop once I brought it online so now all three of my pc's are waiting for the release. Since I depend on my desktop for college I'm going to do the laptop first just in case there's a problem so I can flush it out and save my desktop for last.

Saw this extremely suspicious line in the fine print:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade?ocid=win10_auxapp_LearnMore_win10

What exactly do they mean by that? I certainly won't be installing Windows 10 on any machine until I've confirmed that the final release has all the same options for Windows Update that Win7 etc. have. If there is to be any forced updating, then I'm not interested.

Only FORCED UPDATES. No control over updates with home version of Win10.

https://www.thurrott.com/windows/wi...upgrade-matrix-which-version-you-get-for-free

Enterprise versions don't get a free upgrade as I understand it from the above link.

also from listening to the Windows Weekly show on the streamcast network found at
http://twit.tv/show/windows-weekly/415

The enterprise users will get more flexibility with how they install updates and that people opting for the free update will have things like Service packs or 10.1 pushed out to them probably not with much options to delay the installation of those kinds of updates. It sort of makes sense for the average non-technical windows user. But, I think many who frequent forums like this one would probably want more freedom in that regard.

If you buy a copy of Windows 10 from a store or purchase a license online you're likely to get more freedom with how you install the OS and how you get updates than those to accept the free update afaik.

I highly doubt that. Why would MS have two different sets of Windows Update code bits, one for "free upgraders" and one for "store / online purchasers"? You could be right, but I just don't see that as being likely. It seems more likely that MS wants to push for manditory updates for all home users.

As long as the Pro version still has ALL the old WU options that's OK. It just means I won't be switching any of my Win7 Home licenses to Win10.

Still a dick move if it's true though.

I suggest you install the preview builds, which I believe are professional SKU.
