I've never been a history guy, never will be. Plain and simple. No matter how much i try to enjoy it, I can never get myself interested. I am in a HIST 142 class here (Western Civ 1660-Present) and we have a mid term tomorrow. Ive gone to about half the lectures and all of the discussions. Ive taken really good notes, but I am reading over the study guide for the midterm and theres a list of 150 terms that we have to know and be able to write a paragraph definition for...but they are only going to choose 5 we actually have to do. Id say i know a good quarter of them, the others I am totally lost. I am trying to cram it all in now, but I honestly think it will do me no good...I hate history...only reason i took this class was when i signed up for classes, my Advisor noticed i didnt request any social science classes and told me I should take one as a gen ed....bad idea :( Granted, the midterm is only worth 15% of the total grade...a lot of the points come from discussion participation and 4 papers we write (i do very well on the papers). I really feel as if I should not even bother to continue this struggle trying to cram a ton of info I will never learn in one night. How bad can this affect me in the long run? Im going to be a business major, and they do not require history that i know of (im not in the school of business yet....LAS for the time being). My other 3 classes are very easy, and I should have no issue getting As in them...its this damn history thats kicking my ass. What do you guys suggest/have to offer for me?

update: Just got back from class....the late night studying really paid off....was not as bad as i had thought it would be. Not saying i did stellar, but definately didnt fail it! :beer:s on me!

Ive gone to about half the lectures ...
... and only done half of the reading?

Cramming is not a great way to try to absorb concepts. Steady work over time is much better.

You should be trying harder on a subject you're weak at instead of skipping lectures, if you care about your GPA.

GPA does matter if you're going for a technical degree and/or want the better internship/co-op jobs.

You're a business major, why did you take a class that actually requires usage of the brain?

i know, ive heard it before, and i suppose totally dis-regarded it. Now I know how much this class can really suck, and perhaps keep that in mind for the rest of the semester...All i can do is try my best on the essay (which i can usually BS fairly well) and hope the terms I know already are on there. Then go to class the rest of the sem....:-/ Really wish i didnt put myself in this situation. :(

Unless they renumbered it that's HIST 152, and it's pretty easy. I hated it though. Stupid femanazi lecturers. We spent FIVE MINUTES on both World Wars combined, but weeks on the femanism movements.

You still need the campus gened requirements regardless of what college you're in. HIST 152 covers humanities and western. Stay in it and get credit.

i think 142 is a shortened version of 152...there are some 152 students in the class as well....but its mostly 142 people.

You need to start being proactive.. study a bit each night, like 45 min.. and when memory reguritation (liberal arts) tests come up you will be able to own up on them.

History is pretty easy in that, if you put in the time you can almost be sure it is going to pay off.
