So, here's what I'm running. You can see my rig in the sig, everything is at stock speeds in a SuperLanBoy with the stock fans in it.

I purchased a used XP-120 from the forums here and it came with an Enermax 120MM adjustable speed fan. My original HSF was a Thermaltake Venus 7+ which had a solid copper base with a fan that moved 21.29cfm @ 3000RPM (28dB). I wasn't disappointed with the cooling, I just wanted something a lil' quieter and that offered better cooling; a-la XP-120.

With preliminary testing, here are the before & after results

BEFORE | AFTER
Idle CPU: 35C/95F | 37C/98F
Idle Case: NO DATA | 43C/113F
Load CPU: 63C/145F | 65C/149F
Load Case: 51C/123F | 50C/122F

Okay, so my temps went UP???? Here are the relevant specs on the Enermax fan that is on the XP-120:

Rated Voltage 12V
Rated Current 0.30A
Power Input 2.4W
RPM Inch-H2O CFM dBA
1650 0.084 55.35 30.00
1800 0.096 59.00 32.10
1900 0.107 63.00 33.50
2000 0.118 67.40 35.20
2100 0.134 72.78 37.50

My model apparently goes down to 1300RPM also, so the CFM is probly lower down there also.

I don't think I did as good of a job on the AS5 application this time, but I wouldn't think that would have a huge effect.

Also, maxing the fan speed drops CPU temp by 1C and case (or NB temp, whatever u want to call it) by 3C.

This isn't adding up to me. An XP-120 plus a potent fan equals a higher temperature?

Shed some light on this please!

Maybe it was just a bad application/install. Try wiping the HSF and chip clean with some 90% rubadub alcohol, and reapply the TIM/heatsink.

Let the AS5 settle in for a couple days. As well, there is no substitute for CFM. Want cooler? need powerful fan that can move air. Otherwise, those temps look fine.

Also you have a 100mm fan versus the Venus 7 which only has an 80mm fan...You should be able to run a lower rpm and still push the same air. At same rpnm the 120mm fan should be pushing a lot more cfm....Most of the times the noise may be less as well...The larger fans appear to make a lower humming sound versus higher pitched whinning of a lower size (like the 80mm) fan...I can live with lower humm...

So do you have the XP120 running the same rpm as the venus??? would think the 120mm fans run closer to like 1800-2000rpm and push the same amount of cfm....

Venus: 21.29cfm @ 3000RPM
Enermax Fan: 55cfm @ 1600RPM, max 75cfm @ 2100RPM

As I mentioned, the temps only go down a couple degrees with the fan at max speed versus minimum speed.
The noise is noticeably less, which is nice.

I'm out of town for the weekend, so maybe I'll RDP in and start Prime95 running or something to break in the AS5. I've never seen a noticeable temp drop from AS breaking in, but we'll see. Thanks for the info guys, if temps aren't lower after this weekend I will re-do it; when I put on my NV5 Silencer maybe ;)

Give it a day or two for the AS5, then if you're still not getting the results you expect, take it off and reapply. If you made it a little too thick, or uneven, you could definitely see higher temps.
