Kind of ironic that his music traditionally has been about the demise of our culture to some extent yet now he's basically a salesman hocking his own brand of junk.

I weep for our future.

How so? Tool has some of the deeper music out there esp from a mathematics standpoint.

Really? Have you listened to any of their music? 😕

Aenima lyrics

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

try reading about schism.

However, you seen far to tightly wrapped to understand that.

NO WAY DUDE THEY ARE LYK MATHEMATICIANS BECAUSE THEY SAID JUXTAPOSED AND MOTION AND ATROPHY

Yes good sir, the song you like has a high purpose in learning about the universe.

My brother sees him around a lot. He has a shop in Jerome, AZ called Puscifer, which is also his "new" band. I have had this song called "Cuntry Boner" in my head for the last two weeks. NOT appropriate for a girl to be singing. 🙂

You mean the wine he's poured an immense amount of time and effort into and not just slapped his name on? Yes, I think it's somewhat lame he hooked in with Whole Foods, but this isn't just "Hey look at me! Buy my stuff!" His winery is something he's been very involved with. I won't comment on the fact it may or may not be just to make money, but he's still head and shoulders above just about any other celebrity slapping their name on something and hawking it.

Aenima, Schism, and especially Lateralus (hell, the entire Lateralus album basically), are basically my favorite songs from Tool, sometimes in a way that could be favorite ever, at least towards the top of a comprehensive list.

Lateralus (the song), is just perfect. Not only musically, and especially the mathematical beauty that ties perfectly into the song/concept (hell the entire album is a mathematical wonder), but specifically the lyrical message. I love it.
Tool's the best modern progressive rock band, and I'd say quite possibly the best, or at least my favorite.

I would say Dream Theater is the best modern progressive rock band. I would say tool is the best Hard Rock band. Modern Drummer Magazine often votes (both editor/readers polls) this way in their yearly 'best of' polls. Mike Portnoy, up until last year, won the best "progressive rock" drummer award 13 years in a row. Danny Carey has done well (won a few times) in the 'best hard rock' drummer category.

Lateralus and 10,000 days were remarkably more progressive than their previous efforts. I'd personally say Aenema was an elaborate hard rock record, with them crossing over to full blown progressive for Lateralus.

The guys in Dream Theater are hands down more technically advanced players than the guys in Tool. I would wager DT being able to cover more of Tool's work than vice versa, with Portnoy having the most difficult job covering Carey's parts, and I do cringe at the idea of Labrie trying to cover Maynard's parts. However, I generally like Tool's music more, and I find Maynard much more entertaining and appealing to listen to.

And yes, the Winery is apparently quite the obsession for MJK. I wouldn't take his heart for it lightly.

You pasted the lyrics and yet, relevant to the discussion, I'm wondering if you even read or understand them.

It's just a song about him venting about LA. I don't get why him trying to work hard at a winery makes him a hypocrite because of those lyrics?

😱
I completely forgot about Dream Theater when I wrote that. I feel ashamed. 🙁
Yeah, Tool wasn't always as progressive as they become with their latter works. And I'd also say I do like Tool more than Dream Theater. Not because of musical abilities, of which would entirely be DT then since each member is amazingly skilled with their instrument, but rather, the overall composition and lyrical attributes of Tool really draws me toward them.

Another progressive band is Coheed and Cambria, although they've always been very light on the prog aspect, probably some part due to the last drummer not being exactly super amazing - he could do some progressive timings but wasn't amazing. C&C's last record, sadly, didn't feature their new drummer, but rather Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) doing the studio recording with some guidance in drum patterns from the new drummer, Chris Pennie. Pennie I see as the next drummer god if given his moment to shine. His drum solos are fun to listen to when listening to recent live recordings from C&C. His last band he was with, Dillenger Escape Plan, was kind of like a math-rock band of whatever you want to call it. They went beyond typical progressive stylings, and had insane timing patterns. It was almost work trying to listen to it because a melody wasn't always easy to find if you weren't paying enough attention.

Chris Pennie has some amazing things he can do with the drums, now just looking to see what sound C&C goes with for their next album, and what Pennie can bring to the table to help them achieve that sound. Here's to hoping they go full-blown progressive for the next album, because between their musical ability, coupled with the timing ability of Pennie, they could crank something out rather unlike what they currently have.

Oh and yes, Maynard has been raving about wine for a long time coming now. Outside of Tool, I'd say wine has been one of his biggest passions.

He sold out long before you ever even heard his name.

10,00 days was terrible, and Tool is not "mathematical", Meshuggah on the other hand will blow your mind with their arithmetic prowess.

10k days was great. Meshuggah is way more technical, but their music isn't as compelling as Tool. I feel the same way with DT

I have trouble making it through a Meshuggah song. I realize that there's a lot going on in their music and some serious talent, but man it's harsh.

It's harsh because they are kicking your ass.

I've never had a serious ass beating and walked away thinking, jeez, that was easy.

He didnt sell out, he bought in. 😛

Dude has to make a living I guess...with all the worthless fucks out there pirating his music you can't expect him to keep doing that for a living I guess.

I seriously doubt any band member of Tool would ever have to work again if they so chose.. lol

you assume that all the members know how to manage money?? They might be living paycheck to paycheck just like you and I...Their bills might just be much bigger.
