Actually Anands got a 996 911 Carerra 2. I have seen him on the PCars Board. Plus if you take a look at the car mp3 player article the stick shift and the dash resemble the ones in the 911 and boxster.

Viper GTS: Uhh, make 80k and afford an ~70k+ car? I dont' think so...
80k is not a whole lot of money, especially in areas where the cost of living isn't poverty level. In my area, I can get a really nice condo/townhome/home for ~$2k, but in some places, $2k won't even get you a decent apartment. It's a general rule, you need to make 2x the value of the car to be able to afford it. This isn't applicable across the board, but if one makes $40k/yr and is buying a BMW 325Ci at $32k, then one is SERIOULY overextending.

And I thought that I was doing good buying a year old Jetta Last year..., although I'm thinking Audi S4 after graduation (college) I just watched the CBS thing on Anand, and I just have to say that, now more than ever, he IS THE PIMP!! That's not just Z3, that's an M-Roadster, the high-performance version of the Z3. And did you see the neighborhood he lives in? He's an example to all of us geeks slaving away in tech school or college, I it just inspired the hell out of me!! Someone said earlier that 80 grand a year is nothing. Well, that depends on the area, cost of living and all that, 80 grand would be pretty good here in Dallas, especially for someone around college age...as far as the kid with the Viper, I really don't beleive it was his. I mean, of all the young internet wunderkinds we've heard about (Anand, Shaun Fanning from Napster) None of THEM are driving Vipers. Anands car costs around 50 grand and Shaun Faning, last interview I saw, is driving a Modified Mazda RX-7...so this kid would have to have done something remarkable that we all would have heard about most likely, to afford a Viper. Whatever...I'll keep working on that S4....

Just kick his little a$$ and take that POS away from him before he kills someone!:Q 19 years old is in no way mentally mature enough to even be driving such a machine or having that kind of cash. I mean, look at the money he (might have or might have not) wasted on that GARBAGE!!!!

Anyway what's the big bloody deal, people never buy cars of that value, they just lease them & it's written off through business expenditure or tax.
It wouldn't surprise me if less than 2% of new Mercs are actually purchased by their drivers, even on the nevernever.
Facts is virtually all cars like that are leased as company cars either by the employer or the driver himself (& written off against his car allowance & his tax).

DesignDawg: Hmm...I could either have a Viper GTS, or go to college, but, since they are mutually exclusive, I could afford neither...However, here I am, sitting at college, typing this reply. In fact, by your definition, no one can afford anything; you always have to give up something to buy something else.
Datafly what your looking at is a tiptronic aka automatic shifter in the porsche pic. What you need to look for is a 911 or boxster with a manual carbon fiber shifter.

Lets put it this way. I could right now go and buy a brand new BMW and still have money to pay bills and everything. Would it be smart? No, because at 23 with student loans and the desire to buy a house soon and put money away for the future this would jeopardize that.
Too many people in their 20's buy nice cars and suddenly think that they are now as wealthy as the 45-year old couple up the street driving the same thing. The difference of course is that the couple up the street owns their house and has a million put away for retirement!

I just dont have other expenses thats how Im paying for my boxster. I wont be making double the cost of hte car but well over the cost.
If this guy have a Viper then he probably have a Ford Escort tucked somewhere as an everyday car cuz it would be a pain to drive around in the Viper worrying about nicks and scratch...

I could buy a Ferrari right now and cover the costs, but damn... there's more to life than a car. Since I so adamantly refuse to budget for things I want like, clothes, music, computer parts, etc., I need to have a substantial amount of $$ left after bills. My rule of thumb is: If you can't go out on a Friday night to a nice restaurant, maybe go shopping and buy a new blazer, etc., then one is overextending. It's when you have to think about making the smaller purchases when you acknowledge that you've spent too damn much on your car.
Another thing to note, is insurance. I'm only 20 and have long wanted a new 330Ci, Boxster S, etc., but the insurance payment would be half of my mortgage. I can rationalize a large monthly payment for a home, because at least it's not being thrown into a financial void.

Cars are hardly a good investment most of the time anyway - they are financial voids!
$80k/yr US in Halifax, NS you would live damn nice. Grab a house well within your means for $200k Canadian (quite nice in this area), get a nice car, living expenses etc. etc. No worries

All you people who are saying you could plop down the money for a nice sports car right now and not suffer much... you don't have your own families do you? I'm just a university student now myself, but I know very few adults with families who would feel comfortable just buying an expensive sports car when they have mortgage payments, kids college, and various other expenses.

Although, I could probably more easily rationalize a car payment than I could a huge insurance payment. Being young, insurance is not going to be cheap on any car, but there's a stupidity threshold. Paying $400/mo on insurance for a car just seems absurd to me. Investing half of that over time could yield returns enough to buy the car in cash.
I figure when I'm old enough to reap the benefits of cheaper insurance, I won't want a "sports car" anyway. Eh well, that's irony for you.

Handle: That's a good point, and it's what allows a lot of these people to buy nice cars. I'd rather buy a 2 seater convertible when I'm 20-something, single, no kids, etc., rather than try to do the same when I'm the opposite.

I still say that car is plain butt ugly. I'd take a Porsche 911 over that thing any day, but that's just me. In fact, I'd rather be seen in a nice BMW than a Viper GTS.
And as far as I'm concerned, if you make less than US$250k per year and you buy that car, you deserve a kick in the head. I knew a guy who had a Porsche Boxster and a brand new 1800 square foot house downtown. Then he hit a dry spell for cash... so he sold the house and kept the Porsche. WTF?

WTF?ya well, my friend is 19, MCSE, making $42 an hour, if he didn't have to pay for college tuition he could afford somethign liek that too.
