Well I finally broke down and bought XP. I installed it without a hitch as an upgrade from Win98se. I must say that it is very different. It carried over all my settings and programs but there are a few rpoblems.

The first thing I noticed was that all my files in My Documents are now gone. If they are retrievable please tell me how. It was stupid of me not to back them up.

Next is the Start menu, all the programs are missing and have been replaced by Microsoft shortcuts. The programs are still on the computer so why didn't they carry over? Do I have to put them back manually or is there a way to get them all back there.

I have a small home network, I used Sygate to share it for a long time. Now Sygate refuses to start sharing. Probably due to incompatability with XP. I heard XP has a built in sharing feature. How can I configure that to work with old versions of Windows?

I don't like the way the icons look, I know you can change them but is there a way to apply it to all folders so I don't have to go through everyone?

And last , I also forgot to backup my facorites for IE. When the new one was installed it took them out withoout presearving them. Anyway to get them back?

-Thanks guys

I'm new to xp also, but I think if you goto the network connections and goto the properties of you intenet connection a choice is to "share this internet connectino" a wizard will wlak you through the rest if I remember right.

as for your programs did you click on the option "show all programs" in the start menu? it's at the very bottom.

as for the others I don't know, maybe do a search for a specific document name to see if it's somewhere on your hard drive

Try going to the right click menu on the start menu, then properties, start menu tab, and choose classic start menu. You should be able to find your way around that one more easily.
As to the documents, check under your hard drive to see if they are still in a \My Documents folder or something.

Just do a file search (Cntrl-F) in windows explorer for the file names you are missing... I can't imagine the update deleting them..... just hid them away somewhere

did you set up more than one user account? are you logged in as administrator?

I did the upgrade thingy too and no files, address, favorites, etc... were lost at all?

However, if you are logged into XP as a guest, it would not show them to you......

I am signed in as the system administrator, I only made one user so far. I would try and use the search option but when Win98 was installed a disabled the find button. That setting carried over and it is still not there. The program I used to remove it isn't compatable with XP. Is there a setting somewhere that I can get that button back?
The Programs under the start menu are still missing, but I can't use the search option.
This is turning into a nightmear.
Thanks for your help

Well I found the search button and looked for all my files. Bad news, there all gone. Even all my favorite websites. My internet sharing died too and now the wizard can't get it working again.

Wow, never saw XP install do anything like this before.

You could try backing out the install and going back to 98 to see if your stuff is still there. If that works you could then back it up before attempting the upgrade again, or just clean install.
