Just installed Vista ... HDD going ape****

So I just installed Vista Ultimate x64 and my HDD won't stop grinding. Does Vista do some sort of cataloging at first? Or is it really that resource intensive that for some reason it keeps caching my drive?

I'm tempted to go back to XP x64 if it wasn't for gaming.

Look at resource monitor, whats doing the IO? But yes, Vista is a bit busy the first couple of days until everything is optimized, indexed, etc.

There are a couple of things.

1. Vista indexes a lot of stuff so that file searching will be really fast when you use it. This process runs at absolute rock bottom priority though and should not affect the performance of anything.

2. When you first boot up your pc, Vista begins loading data from your commonly used applications into memory so that when you use the programs later, they open and run much quicker.

3. By default, Vista has Windows Defender set to run a scan every day at 2AM. If you miss this scan, it runs it the next time you turn your pc on. I recommend turning scheduled Windows Defender scans off completely.

YI turned off Indexing cus I almost never search for stuff. I just hate the HD grinding. I also turned Defender off as well.

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely have to disable both. I also never search my PC for anything, and as for Defender I just run MalwareBytes as a scheduled task once a week along with full virus scan.
