So i just retired my Athlon II X4 3.0GHz cpu with stock cooling to the new AMD 960T Zosma cpu.

I installed a new CM Hyper 212+ on it as well.

Nice chip so far. Just changed the multiplier and running at 3.4GHz out of the gate. After 30 minutes of heavy gaming, cpu temp in the bios is at 22 C.

How high do you think i can go with these temps that would be safe to run daily?

I also have not tried to unlock the chip yet either.

Nice job on the oc. Try prime95 to see how high temps will go

looking at wrong temp there or something is wrong with the temp reading, 22C is lower than ambient temperature. Update bios?

Nope, the temps are correct. The bios is updated to the most current. Remember, the 960T only pulls 95Watts as opposed to normal Phenom II's 125 TDP.

The system temp in bios was showing 29 C.

I'll try running Prime for a while and see what it goes up to.

But even during gaming i reached down and the Hyper 212 heatsink was cool to the touch.

Granted, i like it cool in my place, and i keep the thermostat usually at 65 degrees F.

Got the cpu for $50 from Microcenter after i sold the Gigabyte motherboard that came with it for $60. Can't complain for the price. :)

No, you certainly can't.

Now its time to try and unlock those other cores. :)

I'm finding it hard to believe that you're only hitting 22C (mine hits 41C at stock voltage in a room held at 74F), but who knows. Keep overclocking that thing, you know you're not happy with only 3.4GHz :p

FWIW, you can hit 50C load under stress and still be safe for 24/7 use, assuming you don't run LinX as your profession.

Solitare can get quite intense but I wouldn't call it heavy.....

Dude your cpu is not at 22 C while "heavy gaming" unless you litterally live in an icebox. So your chip pulls 95 w so does my 2500k and it can't stay as low as 4 degrees C over ambient while doing anything that can be described as "heavy"

Lol, well i do keep it quite cold in here. I like it chilly. Also, i was only playing COD 4 multiplayer for about 30 minutes, then rebooted to check. My guess is that it was higher of course during the actual game.

But i tell you what, it sure runs cool and the 212+ fins feel cool to the touch.

Haha Chubby, yeah, i'm not quite happy yet at 3.4GHz, i just wanted to start with that. This is honestly the first time i've overclocked a cpu since my Celeron 566MHz -> 850MHz way back in the day.

Sure is easy with the unlocked multiplier and good cooling. Just not sure how high this can/and or i want to go yet. ;)

Why not run HWMonitor in the background so you can see temps in realtime, and get a recording of highs on each core?

The 22C in the bios is not at all representative of what the chip would have been at while gaming. CPUs shed heat almost instantly. My CPU can drop from 50C to 25C in about 5 seconds, assuming it has just completed a task.

Edit: Don't forget to update that sig!

My 960t from MicroCenter unlocked like a champ and I turned it up ~10% and it has been crunching without issue since. I bought the slightly nicer 880G MSI board, which has been fine.

Thanks Termie, i'll download that and try it out. Like i said, been out of the overclocking loop for about 13 yrs. now. Just trying to get back in again.

While sitting in the bios, my system temp shows 22 celcius at idle and the cpu is at 15 celcius.

Of course it's also about 55 degrees in my room and freezing right now and i've got a lot of fans in my case.

15 seems a little high, when I have my place at 55c I am at 12C on the cpu...you probably need to look into it...that's with only 2 fans in my case too...ie not much cooling

You guys are taking computer cooling to new lows, LOL!

55F in your room? Yikes!

It's back up to 65 now with the space heater on. I leave it low overnight because i sleep better, but yeah, it's a little too cold ;)

Good choice on the Hyper 212+. It's about the only reasonably-priced AM3 HSF that can be installed in a non-retarded configuration.

Wow, that's a little warm. Heck, its ~35F outside and I keep my window cracked open.
