Congrats. You aren't just polluting a lot less, you're inhaling a lot less carbon monoxide etc. When I ride in a car with a broken cat or no cat I can smell it

i thought carbon monoxide was odorless?

That's not the only thing that comes out of your exhaust.

it was referencing the above quote... i was more being facetious than obtuse.

my truck has the original cat on it and about 230k miles. it has the cat CeL as well, and if i let it sit and idle a bit you can smell it as well.

Even though I have high flow cats, I still have a faint gas smell. Are you sure though that you had a hit to your HP? Typically headers only add 20-30hp at the most and I doubt that cats would less than 5hp which isn't noticeable.

i think the reason my truck felt the loss was the exhaust restriction. i went from 3" almost open pipes to the stock 2" with cats and mufflers. the only places i really noticed it was on steep inclines or pulling larger loads on a trailer. may have been some buttdyno at work tho.

From what I understand, the big power difference in going cat-less has to do with exhaust resonance, not "flow." The high-flow cats improve flow but generally do not improve resonance properties enough to make a huge difference in power.

These are the high flow cats I installed last year on my modded Mustang to reduce the toxic fumes (previously had no cats). No ill effects (power loss or noise) but they do get warm and add heat.
Many others at the Mustang Corral have used them as well, some drag race regularly with them too and have no complaints.

At least you guys have the option of removing the cats. It really doesn't work in California as we have a mandatory smog test every two years.

No one should have the option of removing cats. By running a vehicle without them, you unnecessarily pollute the air that everybody else breathes. I don't give a fuck if you gain 2hp.

It's a lot more than that. My car with a good tune will pass a sniffer test with no cat, so you can take your snobby attitude and shove it.

If you`re so concerned, you`re barking up the wrong tree there. How about ships that aren`t regulated? How about lobbying to get traffic congestion addressed as that FAR exceeds the amount of pollution than a few of these cars are going to ever produce? How about your precious hybrids and all the crap that it takes to build them? How about trains, trucks, motorcycles, factories, power plants...

Of the 16 million tons of NOx emissions in the US, 2.6M is from gas powered vehicles on the road. 2.4 is from diesel. The rest is from non road use vehicles; ships, trains, etc.

3M of that 16 is from power generation.

Of the 69 million tons of CO emissions in the US, 38.7m is from gas powered vehicles on the road.

Of the 1B tons of lead, 579M is from aircraft. 0 is from vehicles on the road.

Of the 10.7M tons of SO2 emissions, 7.7M is from power generation. 31K is from gas powered vehicles on the road.

Of the 13.7M tons of volatile organic compounds, 3.3M are from gas powered vehicles on the road.

That said, stop bitching about something that`s as significant as pissing in the ocean and worry about the rest of it. A few people removing cats here and there is rediculously insignificant. There`s an average of 240M vehicles on the road in the US. So, I don`t give a fuck about your tree hugging attitude. You guys need to do some research and get your facts straight.

I think you're missing the point. Most of these pollutants aren't that significant globally, just the greenhouse gases are. They ARE significant driving on the street where they must be breathed by your fellow motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, birds, etc. When some asshole without a cat is in front of me at a stop light, I then have to roll down my windows to get rid of the fumes he pumped into my Jeep. Never had to do that with a cargo ship.

And enough already with the "building Prius batteries" nonsense. Humans mine valuable minerals, and then we recycle them ad infinitum. Get over it.

Well then, get all these guys with farts coming out of their jacked up trucks and Civics to do these perfect tunes.

The vast majority of aftermarket exhausts are catbacks, meaning the factory catalytic converter is intact and only the exhaust after it has been replaced.

Go find another outlet for your pent-up frustration.

Are you just being intentionally obtuse? I'm not talking about cat-backs... If they were cat backs they wouldn't smell like shit.

If I tell you that your farts smell like a landfill after you've been eating cheese, are you going to respond "The vast majority of people have no problems digesting dairy products"?

I don't think I'm the one being intentionally obtuse. :whiste:

I'd venture to guess I've seen many more average-joe cars that have been neglected and need emissions work than I've seen catless performance vehicles. Then again, it doesn't usually bother me anyway so I don't pay much attention.

They usually aren't performance vehicles. They're usually F350 pickups with a 12" lift, or riced out Civics and DSMs.

I bet they have dirty engines due to K&N filters, their drivers are dead due to sleeping in their car with the windows closed, and they're just crappy mustangs which are inferior to anything european as well, correct?

Take your trolling somewhere else it is not wanted in ATG...

Nice troll post. Apparently you don't believe in the disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics, or engineering? And apparently you have me confused with someone who is into European cars?!

I'm just amazed there are people on this forum defending assholes who run catless exhausts.

OP, you're probably equating a quieter exhaust note to less power. I've had it happen to me numerous times on different cars.

Really, even a 10hp on that motor should be borderline unnoticeable, unless the cat's can't flow enough to begin with (which is a different problem altogether).

I don't get the loud exhaust obsession. A few extra HP isn't worth your car sounding broken. If you have a v6 and want a v8, get a new car. I like that my Charger doesn't sound obnoxious and is nice and quiet in the cabin. It's still a fast car. No amount of HP is worth ruining it.

If a loud exhaust sounds broken, you're doing it wrong.
