It comes with a plate thing to cool memory from the back. The 7800GT doesn't have memory on the back: http://server6.theimagehosting.com/image.php?img=10rearclean.JPG therefore its okay to leave it off right? Other than that bit of confusion, the Silencer is very nice, it cools about 5 degrees better and is a little quieter comparing both fans at 25%. Installation was not that bad either although I had been dreading doing it since I got it.

Edit: My CPU temp also dropped about 2 degrees, so it actually is beneficial that it blows the hot air out the back.

No you dont need the backplate,

I wish I could run my GPU coolers at 25%! With SLI I need to run both my NV5 Silencer and my VF700 at 100% to keep them cool. My computer sounds like a freakin turbine. and that is with a watercooled CPU!

The difference between 25% and 100% is very minimal so I set it at 100 for 3D applications. I have another problem now, I can hear my hard drive over the fan, heh. I got a pretty nice overclock on the video card too without really even trying, 500 and 1200.

How hard is it to install if you dont really know what you're doing? I'm thinking of getting a cooler for my 7900GT...... Would it work on a 7900? On newegg it's listed to work with 6800, 6800GT, 6800U, 7800GT/X

I think they reused the same basic PCB layout for the 7900GTX, but the 7900GT is shorter so I'd have no idea if this would fit that card. Arctic Cooling lists it as compatible with 7800 series only (for Rev.3 only).
