Interesting scenario... the thing is so quiet that i started to hear a very low pitch ping type noise... that wasn't constant...

I put my ear in and discover it is the ibm 60gxp. I thought these things were supposed to be ultra silent?

It's kind of obnoxious now relative to everything else.

Unlikely... simply put the HD is louder than the fan. If your HD was failing you'd be getting read/write errors. The HD is quiet relative to others. If you want it quieter... go to IBM's website and DL the feature control tool software. You can put the drive in quiet mode, but it will decrease the performance. If you are still worried about the drive... start backing up your important data.

Plug it into your motherboard so you will get some fan control. Generally PSU fans are louder than case fans when you go quiet. Of course you can't OC as well, but that's the tradeoff.

it is plugged into the board

i thought the diode was for fan control?

anyway it isn't a constant low whine... it is rapid on and off sort of

very quiet but i can still hear it if i pay attention.

That's why I ended up not building a silent system even tough I watch a lot of movies. No matter what i did my computer would make noise so I gave up and ended up getting three 80mm Papst Ultra High Output fans (not Delta's I'm not that crazy) for case and hsf (PAL8045). If I couldn't get silence I could at least get performance.

Hey flawedecision what CPU speed and mainboard are you using that heat sink and fan combo for. I was thinking of getting the exact same combo for an Athlon XP 1700 on an MSI K7N420 PRO NForce board but iam not sure if it will do justice for the CPU but i think it should fit in the mobo.

what's your experience with the combo so far?

I have an MSI K7T 266A/Athlon 1200 AXIA

It has run very well so far. I'm very pleased.

I'm looking into a sound proof alternative like a sound proof box...

flawed, from where did you buy the fan?

From the only place in the world that sells it I believe... seriously :p

The thing literally emits no identifiable sound. Unplug/plug a few times and I can't tell it is on without getting up for a close look.

How would you get air in and out?

So long as it had some sort of temp control mechanism I don't think fresh air would be needed... would it? It could just recycle the air within the box... and the mechanism could regulate the air to deal with the heat being created by the computer.

Am I violating any laws of physics with this proposal?
