the fans are set on 29% and do not increase under load (a common know issue with 8800GT). to fix this - download RivaTuner and set your fan speed to about 50-70%. That will help a lot. i suggest going as high as possible until you can't take the noise.

RivaTuner is the way to go. I run mine at 35% fanspeed in Windows, and allow it to ramp to 50% when the temp crosses 60C, and 75% fanspeed if it ever crosses 70C, which it only did briefly a couple times (so I raised the first ramp fanspeed to 55% and will see if that solves that).

I downloaded that program and set the fan speed to 65%, but it onlydropped it a few degrees. Its down to 67c now.

My old BFG 8800GT idled @ 61C and got up to 108C after 15 min. of the ATITool artifact test. You should try running the artifact test for 10-15 min to see just how hot yours gets. There are also a few threads in this forum discussing how the factory cooler on the 8800 allows them to run hot in most cases.

What card are you using now? I'm curious because I have a BFG 8800gt on the way, hope I don't have to RMA the thing. That lifetime warranty might actually be of some use to me now.

Wife has a BFG 8800GT oc and its fan runs at low speeds too.
Just use a utility to set the fan speeds and it will be just fine.

I used the gainward expert tool for hers.

I don't mind hacking it, I usually mess around with all my hardware even if it needs no hacking. I just hope the fan doesn't become too loud after increasing the speed.

Meh, I'd probably be setting manual speed ramp-ups in RT anyway. But having to do it will annoy a lot of people who are buying it to make their kids happy.

Actually i consider the fan getting loud as a good thing.
You can set the fan speed vs temp and if you do it right when the the fan gets too loud, then you know the card is getting too hot while gaming.

My problem withn the fan speed "bug" is, i feel bad for normal everyday users who dont know to use a utility.....i'll bet theyre cards are running hot all the time!

Yeah, but how many normal everyday users were even aware of the 8800GT launch and were excited enough to keep checking all the spots that had it before it sold out?

My eVGA 8800 GT SC is out for delivery today, I will fire up my old 7800 GTX for it's last testing of Crysis just to see how hot it gets then install the 8800 GT SC along with rivatuner or ntune. Which one is better ntune or rivatuner?

You need good airflow in your case for this card. Runs hot as. Also ATItool doesn't get the card hot enough to really say much. Play a demanding game or something. So far I've found either crysis or stranglehold are very demanding.

Can you have RT and ntune installed at the same time without any conflicts? I am a newb when it comes to RT, heh I could even find the tab to monitor the temps/fan so I just uninstalled it after I tried to disable the power user tab so I wouldn't screw up my registry. Anyway in ntune my old 7800 GTX ran on auto at 48% what value should I set the 8800 GT? I have it manually set to 50% for now.

how to you make those adjustments, which tab? I'm using ntune for now until I become familiar with RT. Any suggestions on where I can learn the basics just want to set the fan speeds so the card doesn't get to hot, no need to OC as it already overclocked 650/1950
