The silencer is mainly for those of us who are "anal" about noisy computers. Most people I know don't get why anyone would drop the cash for a gt, when they can play all of the same games with a 9800pro. They feel the upper end is anal about having the best. So what the hell is my money and if I want to spend a couple of hundred bucks on having a very quiet computer - so as to best enjoy my sound system - call me anal or an enthusiast of quiet computers. IMO the best computers are quiet. If someone wants the fastest possible system regardless of noise, I don't crap on their threads. ;)

using your logic, why don't we also put a "louder" fan on the ref setup & compare?

Not at all... my logic is that cooling can be improved by spinning a fan faster... so no matter how quiet and efficient you get it, it can be MORE efficient.

it can be, but doesn't mean it will be... there comes a point where the heatsink simply cannot dissipate heat regradless of how fast the fan runs... there's a reason people use peltiers instead of 20" room fans :p

besides, your statement still makes no sense, especially in the scope of this discussion.

So why spend another 40 bucks and void your warranty on top of this just to get it 8C cooler? I can see in CaiNaM's case, it was necessary because his temps were @ 100C. I actually would have just RMA'd the card myself.

So not sure why I would get this NV5 silencer for me personally.

I installed the nv silencer 5 on my 6800 gt. and my idle temp is usually around 49/50c, and my full load temp never gets above 68c. it was worth it. and these temps were when my card was running at Ultra speeds

and my case temp is lower too

well, my system is watercooled, and it sets on my desk within 2 feet of me.. so it doesn't take much for me to hear it. i was used to the x800, which was inperceptual except during bootup, so to me the gt fan was quite noticeable, even if it wasn't particularly annoying.

as far as an rma on the card, had there been any avail with the ref cooler, i probably would have, but there were none, and little availability overall. wasn't going to have my system down for days waiting for rma shipping. besides, i wanted to test the cooler anyway :)

Sorry about stupid questions. I have tried to google but haven't really found anything useful.

Is there any other way to make it less noisy? I don't mind noise when playing, but I would like the idle noice to be lower. I have also XFX 6800 GT and antec sonata, with a temp controlled CPU and the chipset fan replaced with a heatsink.

The difference to my old 9700pro is huge. This is as loud as my old computer, the improvement I got with this case and the heatsink was lost.

Is there any way to tweak it to spin slower in idle 2d mode? Underclocking doesn't help.

And if i choose to install this silencer, how hard is it? Is it possible to put the old fan back if my attempts fail? Wouldn't want to ruin my expensive card... Is this an easy operation?

other than replacing the cooler, which is the source of the noise, i'm not sure there is a way to quiet it down.

as for difficulty, not counting the time it took to r&i the card, the hsf install took less than 5 min.

So there is no way to make the fan spin slower? I would have expected some kind of automatic control that would control the fanspeed according to load.

How is the Zalman Dual heat pipe + optional fan compared to the NV Silencer 5 in SOUND and PERFORMANCE?

Question on this NV Silencer...

I have a 6800 Ultra dual slot design, does this come with a slot to screw onto the card??? I see that the NV silencer has a rear exhaust design and if I were to just slap this sucker on there it would be exhausting right back into my case!!!

Found this.... on Newegg Review...

The included documentation is NOT for a 6800 ultra, and none can be found on the manufacturers website either. So you will be somewhat on your own, luckly its a pretty easy process. Second issue is that the included expansion slot cover is not made for a 6800 ultra, so you will be forced to do one of three things, cut the stock 6800 expansion slot cover in half, not screw in your 6800 ultra, or not exhaust the air from the cooler outside your case.

The rev. 2 of the silencer will have better support for the 6800 Ultras.
