Just hooked up my Logitech G5 laser mouse and G15 keyboard.

I received my G15 keyboard yesterday via UPS, and decided to go ahead and pick up the G5 mouse at my local Best buy as well to make it a set. I've been using it now for a couple of hours (minor chest pain has kept me awake early this morning), so here's a couple of pics and my impressions so far.

Keep in mind that this is my first Logitech inputs I've ever owned, as I'm normally a Microsoft man. I'm coming from the excellent, but old, Office keyboard and an Intellimouse Explorer (3.0 I think?).

First up, the keyboard is very, very nice. So far I'm not disappointed in this thing at all. With it being dark in the room upon first bootup, Windows installed some drivers that would work for it, and the blue lighting lit up for the first time. I cycled through the two light levels (3 if you count them being off). In my decently dark room, there was hardly any noticeable difference between the lowest light setting and highest light setting. You could see them brighten just a bit, but if someone set them to low and high and made me guess, it'd be luck of the draw.

The keyboard lit up.

I do like how just the keys light up, and doesn't give so much of an ambient glow around them. It makes for a very slick looking presentation

The LCD is also very nice, and held atleast one surprise for me. When booting up, it shows the Logitech screen, and when booting into windows, cycles through showing the date/time and CPU/RAM usage. The LCD updates fairly fvcking quickly, basically instantaneously. When installing the background program from the CD, this was about all the options you could go with, besides the media player function, which will show song title, album title, and position in song. A volume bar also pops up when adjusting the volume. It will cycle through all this stuff, or stay on one, depending on what you set in the program. You also have the option to manually cycle through what you want via some nondescript black buttons below the LCD (which almost blend in with casing) and above the volume and media controls. This would be helpful to keep a definite eye on game stats (once someone programs something) or CPU usage without it cycling to other stuff while playing a game. And if you did want to switch mid-game, you could without exiting.

And now to the surprise I wasn't expecting. With the CPU meter, updating in real time, shows both core usage! Very nice. Logitech thought of the gamers (a good thing since it's a gamers keyboard).

The dual-CPU LCD display in action.

A close-up look at the lighting on the keys. As you can see, little pieces of some of the keys do not light up, like the n on 3/Pg Dn or the e on Home. I would imagine this is with all the G15 keyboards, not just mine.

Next up is the mouse. There's not much to say about this thing, except that it works. The on-the-fly sensitivity works perfectly, the buttons feel solid, and the addable weights are fantastic. The grip feels a bit like a gritty rubber. Not sure how it will be yet, as I've yet to play a game with the mouse. The wheel doesn't feel as good as my old MS intellimouse, but I'm sure I was just used to the old one. Once I wear it in, it'll be good as new ;).

The weights come in a sleek looking tin case, with the G5 logo emblazoned on it. The weights are a really, really nice idea, and work perfectly.

The laser tracks fine on my medium colored mouse pad. I've not had one hiccup with tracking, and I hope it stays that way.

Pic of G5 with flash.

I know a couple of others here have picked up the G15 (and more with the G5), but ask any question you might have, or request particular pics if you want, I don't mind.

If you want to get technical, it's 54 programmable buttons. Sure, there's only 18 G keys, but there are 3 modes. Mode 1 has 18 different macros, then you can switch to Mode 2 for another 18, and Mode 3 for another 18. The mode buttons are lit orange above the G keys, and can be switched on the fly. Include the macro record button next to those, and you can record this stuff in the game when needed.

And thanks for the compliments on the sig :).

The finish on that mouse reminds me of a control panel dashboard that has been through hell. Really it does. I don't get this. I guess it's like the bleached/ragged jeans you can buy new now. The MX518 looked like a helmet that had a ball peen hammer taken to it. I swapped shells with the red MX510 and it looked so much better. At least the G7 has a "normal person's finish" about it. :)

The sig is just trying to get a laugh out of people :).

You should have bought the G7 mouse instead. Corded laser mice are so "2001."

I considered it, but the keyboard is wired, so it was kind of pointless to spend the extra money for a wireless mouse. What good is cutting away one wire when there is still one being ran?

You should have bought the wireless keyboard. Corded keyboards are so "1989."

LOL. Nicely put, but I couldn't imagine the battery drain if they made a wireless version of the G15.

I have a Logitech cordless optical mouse, and I am not so sure OP made the wrong decision. The accuracy just isn't what you like to have for games.

Looks nice...but you really shouldn't put your mouse on such a wet surface :D. If it wasn't for the odd color jobs on some of the newer Logitech mice, I'd think about getting one too.

Nice keyboard! I really love my Saitek Eclipse and the blue LED is sweet. I have the G5 too and I like it.

Does anyone know how to get the side to side mouse wheel action to work as a bound key in a game?

OP?

Have you installed the Logitech G-Series driver/program from the cd that came with the keyboard? The LCD will not work until that program is installed and running in the background, so as to send the info to it.

Have you tried going into the setpoint software and setting up a profile for whichever game you're trying to use? I'm not familiar with trying to set anything up with the mouse yet (with the keyboard, it's super easy), but I can test it a little when I get a chance if you can't get it to work.

I was about to buy this along with a Copperhead but then I figured this would improve my score in Battlefield 2 better.

Nice setup. If I had use for a nice joystick/throttle combo, I'd get one.

In my exp, pics of Logi mouses look pretty different from when your holding the in your hand looking at it. Something about the wierd design they "paint on it

OK, let me get this right..... you wake up early in the morning with chest pains.... instead of having it checked out or something along those lines you decide to play with new computer hardware? That-a-boy, glad to see people have their priorities strait. :)
