I just heard this on NPR's Day to Day. Amazon.com actually has a toll free customer service number. :) The reporter found it in their SEC filing. < Cue drum roll >

Yes, they've always had a toll-free customer service number, but they guard it like it's a matter of national security.

Yup, a screw up in my order had me looking for it when I placed an order a couple years ago. Took a while to find on the site, but it was there.

thanks and maybe people can post some hard to find toll free number of some other retailer. Is buy.com one of those?

That link is awesome! By the way, I heard the bit on NPR this morning on my drive to work. The guy who was reporting has a column @ Slate. He says that the Amazon phone number appears only on ONE webpage on the whole site. The worst part is that the only way you could view this page is by placing an order - once you submit your order a confirmation page will appear with the phone number somewhere on it.

And the CSR's I have dealt with when calling this number actually seem to know what they are doing!

I love being able to bitch to a real live person rather than IM or email.

I called 1-800-555-1212.

What is the big friggin deal?

Everytime I reload the page that has the phone number on it, it goes up a couple of points!

I just checked and that's the number I've had in my Rolodex for a couple of years.

I also have (206) 266-2992

I've never had to use either of them as e-mail has always worked well for me.

You're right, it's never been hard to find...all you have to do is ask.

YAY!
I never was able to find their toll free help number, before. It isn't on their site, so for me, it was hot enough to share.

And anyone who says NPR sucks, sucks deeply on the straw dipped deep into the deepest wells of ignorance.

YAY! :)
