No. My vet's rates are no where near that high.

Housecall - performed surgery on one of our animals, had to anesthetize the animal for the surgery. That was around $100. Took two young goats to the vet; both were put under to have their horns removed for someone who was purchasing the goats from us. They were too old & the horns too developed to simply burn them off like some people do with young goats. Total bill was well under $100.
Vet comes to house to draw blood from our entire herd of goats. "Hey, while I'm here, our office records show that 2 of your dogs need their booster shots for rabies this year & (some other shot.) - that was a grand total of about $20 extra.

It's tough. With needing shots everyday you can't leave him alone or travel or anything like that. Really changes how you have to care for your pet. Hopefully yours takes shots better than mine did, I know with my dog I wouldn't have been able to go that route and would have had to just let life take its course.
 
My parents spent about 4K getting ligaments rebuilt in both hind legs of our cocker spaniel.

Edit - I've spent a few hundred dollars on vet car for my rats. Bayril, nasal/dental surgery, anti-inflammatory stuff.
 
I love dogs and I've loved all the dogs I've had, but I've also had 3 dogs die on me, and you know once you get the replacement dog, the old dog is kind of an afterthought.

$500 is my max for vet work, anyything more and it's put to sleep time.

My sister spend $5000+ on ACL surgery for a dog (like the dog was an NFL football player) the surgerys all failed and the dog just limps around now. Except my sis is out 5 grand she could have put in her kid's college fund...
 
I have done, and would do again. It all depends on the particular ailment, age, and condition of the pet.
 
I spent $2200 early this year on my 10 year old dog with prostate problems that ended up being cancer and only got an extra month out of him. I'm not exactly well off but I could afford it and would have spent twice that if I thought it would have helped. Loved that damn dog. It was too the point that the only thing left to do was remove most of his prostate which would have most likely left him incontinent. Being 10 years old and an inside lay on the couch dog I didn't want to put him through that and then make him stay outside if it even worked.

Thought everybody on this forum was rich? What is a few grand for years worth of enjoyment?

Are you saying you paid $10k out of your own pocket or that the entire bill was $10k and pet insurance covered it? or both(meaning you paid $10k out of pocket and pet insurance reimbursed you for the expenses)?

How much is pet insurance per pet or per breed of animal you have per month/year?
Does it cost to insure them increase yearly as they age older ala "life insurance" or is it like auto where you keep paying the same rate until you file a claim? or is it just like a regular health/dental insurance with annual maximum benefits?
