Just had to fork over $2800 for Dog Diabeetus

I just had to hospitalize my dog for up to 4 nights to stabalize her glucose. Would you spend this kind of money on your pet for an illness?

Good thing it is a great $$$$ month at my work!

Edit: She is only 4 years old and should live her normal life span as long as we do the twice daily insulin injections.

Long ago, My wife and I decided to set a limit on how much we were willing to spend to care for a pet that needed expensive health care. That way it eliminates some of the stress when one of our pets gets sick.
 
i don't have that kind of money. however, back in high school my mom got the dog radio and chemotherapy for cancer. that was $$$.
 
2800 just isn't feasible for a pet medical bill.
Id be forced to put the pet down.

recently had to on a 1 year old cat. they wanted 3k to save its life.
 
I have before. 1 cat who had a urinary blockage. ~500 to fix him up. Another cat who died of Congestive heart failure. ~2000 trying to save him.

At least yours lived. 🙁
 
It's easy to say "No I wouldn't but I can understand those who would". However if it was my dog, it would be really tough to say "Sorry buddy, can't spend money on you even though you've been a loyal companion. I'm going to let you die". Unless the dog was a real bastage...then I might not fix him/her.

FYI - They should call it livabeetus
 
I put my dog down when he developed diabetes. He was old, 12 years and had lost a lot of vision due to it. I figured that it was wrong to be selfish and subject him to two shots a day when he was already afraid of vets and needles. He wouldn't understand anything other than the owner that loved him and he loved was now hurting him everyday.

From a financial standpoint...

I don't know, I'm 4k into my dogs after 3 years in. Seems stupid to say "I dropped all this money into you already, I COULD spend more right now and increase your life expectancy by 100% or I could let you die...."

Of course, the decision is a lot easier if the dog is 4 vs if the dog is 9

Being unwilling to spend $1000's to save fido or puss doesn't mean you don't love your pets. It just means you've made a rational choice BEFORE the crisis to limit the effect on the human members of the family.

That is true, but when it's your own pet that you love, it's really hard just to "let" it die. But I totally agree. If I'm strapped for money and have other obligations to humans....sorry doggie, but I'll get a replacement for you in a few months and not drop $1000s on you.

I cannot easily afford dropping $2800 at the moment (without dipping into my emergency unemployment money)
 
$20 for a nice steak dinner as its last meal and the $150 or whatever to put it down... the trick is to then get another dog that looks just like the old one. and hopefully its just as smart.
 
It would depend on what the illness was and how old the pet is. If it is only a few years old, probably. If it is near it's normal life (around 15 people years) probably not.
