Just had my car repainted, what should my expectations be?

So some assmonkey keyed my car while parked in the city. I researched the local shops, picked one, and finally got my car back. They did a decent job but two things leave me :

1. They were supposed to remove all the dings. They left a big one behind- how do you sand, fill and paint a car without noticing this? Like I wouldn't notice when I picked it up? Wtf? So they're sending out a "paintless" ding removal guy to see if he can fix it.

2. There are panels that have dust, or something, caught in the paint. A few spots on the door, lots on the bumper. I know cars aren't repainted in surgically clean rooms but what should my expectations be, a factory smooth paint job? I paid $5000 to have this thing done. Will the paint cure and then these spots buff out, or ? I don't know if I would just be an ass to go back and question them without knowing this was somehow inferior. I mean, it looks nice, these are things only noticable on close inspection...

The car looks like vader would drive it. A metrosexual vader, sure, but none the less... :D

Wow, you paid 5 grand for a paintjob? What kind of car is it and how much work did they do (major bodywork, replace parts)? If they didn't, since you say it has dust or trash in it, it can be wetsanded and buffed. This is usually done a few days after it was painted while the paint is still kind of soft. If you wait too long it will be a pain.

I had my old Caravan repainted at 1 Day Paint for $600 and it sounds like they did a better job than you got.

For five grand I would take the car back and demand they make it right immediately. That's enough money for a factory perfect paint job.

It was painted three days ago. They just filled in the scratches, etc, filled in two dents (left the third.) There was no major bodywork outside of that done. Nearly the whole car was repainted, though. It's an Audi TT.

So these things can be buffed away? That's good to hear. I'm trying to take some photos to show you what I'm talking about.

Like I said, it has to be done soon after it is painted. I worked at a body shop for 7 years and we always wetsanded and buffed a car after it was painted. I'm waiting for the pics to see exactly what your talking about. Is it silver?

What if you don't have it wet sanded? Will the surface be rough?

Insurance paid for most of it.

Here's a pic. I tried to take a closer pic of the "little stuff" but it doesn't seem to photograph well. Still trying.

It depends on the amount of trash or other contaminates it has while it was being painted. Generally a good paint job will not that have much trash, overall it will be smooth with a speck of trash here and there. This is not a good pic but this is mine, I painted it about a year ago and it wasn't buffed. MX6

you got the whole car painted because it got keyed?

won't that jack up your premium?

Um, the whole car was keyed. Will it jack up my premium? Dunno, but that's what insurance is for.

Jason the car was went sanded I think. The hood is flawless but the more vertical pieces, particularly the bumper have the most "trash" in it. It's almost like they tried real hard on the hood and slacked off a bit on the less obvious pieces. Probably paranoia on my part, lol.

Im not thrilled with the thought of confronting them on this but I guess I'll just go down there and see if they can provide any insight..

I can appreciate having that expectation, but in reality is one even obtainable outside of a factory?

Of course.

Any paintshop worth a damn should be able to give you a factory finish.. Especially if they're charging you 5 grand.. for less than a complete repaint! :Q

I don't think factory paint is the be all, end all of paintjobs. It's entirely possible to get a "better than factory" paintjob... although that's going to be subjective of course..

paint booth pwnz j00.

If you think it's dust in the paint, it probably is. I just had my car in the body shop, to repair driver side door damange, it came back with a bad finish and lots of dust in the clear cloat. I took it back and bitched, they redid the door. It's better now, but the paint finish when looking on at an angle, you can tell it's not the super glossy/mirror factory look. I give up though, it's just an accord and I don't have time to dick around with the body shop anymore.

My dad has this philosophy that most body shops suck.
