First major dental work ever, and thankfully no pain whatsoever during the whole 1 hour procedure. However, the pain afterwards (now) is pretty bad...nearly as bad as the toothache that prompted me to go to the dentist in the first place :| How long does this last? I have to go back next monday for further treatment on it.

That'll teach ya' to brush your teeth everyday. 😉

Seriously, though, sorry to hear you're in pain. Hope you feel better ASAP.

I don't think Motrin is gonna be enough. She said if it gets to bad call her for a prescription for strong stuff...i shoulda just asked for it then and there 😕

On top of that the whole left side of my face is swollen because of this infection... my left side looks fat 😉

I'm also taking an anti-biotic. argh...why so much trouble for a damn tooth!

My face blew up like a balloon when I got my wisdom teeth removed. I looked like a chipmunk with its cheeks full. :Q

Ah, what is the dosage for motrin?

400-600mg every 4-6 hours. Of course I am gonna do the maximum for now (600mg every 4 hours!). I don't think you're supposed to go over 400mg/6 hours for regular stuff though, it's just that dental pain is more sever and you need it. If it gets extremely bad, i can take 500mg of tylenol in between the doses of motrin to help

I've had 3 so far (being a geezer and not flossing enough) and yes the pain after is the bad part -- the pain was always gone by the next day for me though, so if you keep taking your motrin you should be OK.

what kind of dentist do you have? what a crock of crap. he should have prescribed you some type of pain killer. thats crazy to tell you to take motrin lol.

Well, it's a she first of all, and she was very nice. This was my first major dental work so if it went bad I could be fearing dentists for the rest of my life, but she was damn good.

The motrin seems to be helping a bit so far...at least it's not throbbing pain like my original toothache was (as of right now, the worst pain i've felt in my life BTW!)..and this pain isn't giving me a headache, which is a good thing. If it doesn't improve tomorrow I am gonna go get some major drugs though 😀

You had an infection, she probably wasn't able to drill the whole root because she couldn't tell where it ended. If they can't see the bottom (because of puss) of the tooth they won't go to the bottom because they don't want to drill down into the jaw. As the infection dies (pennecillian) the pain will reduce and after a week it should be gone enough she can see the bottom and finish the root canal at which point she will shape your tooth for a crown.

You can take 800mg of Ibuprofen every 6 hours not to exceed 2400mg every 24 without damaging your liver. (That's the prescription dose for it). You can also mix and match with Tylenol, Tylenol is good for 5000mg a day so if you need a little more kick with some of that ibuprofen take a couple extra strength tylenol. If the pain gets horrible call her up and complain up a storm and demand a narcotic pain killer. They don't like prescribing them but if you make a good case that the pain is bad the majority will give you a real pain killer.

Thanks for the info! and yes that's exactly the problem. She said this procedure will take 3 visits. 🙁

If the Motrin is ineffective and you don't get a prescription soon enough, try 2 Aleve, which is a pretty strong pain reliever (normal dose is 1; follow the label instructions of course).

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I believe the pain reliever prescribed was just the industrial-stength version of Aleve (sodium naproxen or something).

You seem to be taking it fairly well. I find it curious how a lot of people absolutely fear any dentist and dental pain.
