i have a friend that weighs over 500 lbs - i offered to help buy him a new wardrobe if he'd get down to 250 or so. we'll see how that goes.

I got so used to hiding in big baggy clothing that I have no sense of what might look good on me anymore. My b/friend and some of my friends have been urging me to buy smaller clothing that shows off my figure,my girl friend has even gifted me with some cute tops from J.Crew and Old Navy...gulp but it's hard to change the mental visual image each of us carry concerning our size.At any rate,I think I'm going to push aside my fears and ask for some help in picking things that will look good on a 5ft 9 slender person:)

Well now we really need PICS!!!
If you are slim then everything will look good on you. ;)

you go girl! :)

i have been thinking about this type stuff more lately, i am planning on going to my 20 year high school reunion next year, i would like to be presentable (i.e. not a fat slob, not that i am obese, just need to drop ~30 #) , what i really need is regular exercise. i am sure to have heart trouble in my 50's if i don't start walking/running/moving

I'm wearing shorts today that are a little bit too short..

but when I tried them on at the mall..it was the only pair that fit me waist-wise. i didn't realize it'd be THAT short.

but ish ok...i like the attention. heehee. :D

Geekbabe, I might be wrong, but for you I'm thinking fitted/classic/tailored. Check out the clearance racks at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and The Limited for some nicely made wardrobe basics.

THEN... there are some CUTE little sundresses at Old Navy... I wear a strapless bra with my spagetti strap slip dresses and I almost feel a little too sexy to be seen in public (so I throw on a little crocheted cardigan, lol).

These are the ones I just got... very inexpensive and very flattering (with the right bra, hehe)

Wahhh! I paid full price and it's on SALE

Sexy but Sweet (with a little short sleeved cardigan, this is a really nice look)

Anyway, I have to really look for stuff that doesn't scream 'old lady' but doesn't make me look like I am trying to be a teenager, either. NOT easy, let me tell you...

Oh, and you might try BONGO jeans. They are in the junior section of department stores and I find they are much better fitting than the jeans in the misses department. But everyone is different!!!

<----wishes she was in BeanTown, I'd be your fashion fairy godmother! :D

I love Old Navy,I'm also partial to The Gap and J.Crew:)

I hear you on how hard it is to find age appropriate clothing,I'm 46 and it seems things meant for my age range all involve polyster and elastic waist bands... not my thing at all.

congratulations! New clothes are always nice, especially if you have a new figure to show off...not that I'd know. I've always been skinny (not "bragging", it sucks...), but I've been working out to put a few pounds on, and it's nice to see shirts sitting better.

Congrats again.

congrats geekbabe!

a couple of years ago i trained with a friend of mine who was training for a bodybuilding show and i lost a ton of weight and fat(~170->~140@5'6"; 16%->5% body fat). i had to buy a whole bunch of new clothes because they were all falling off me literally. my belt didn't even have enough holes to help.

i also splurged and bought a sweet black dkny 3 button suit as a little reward :)

keep up the good work!

We're sorry, the Old Navy store requires you to accept our third-party datamining service cookies.

:p

Bah! Frickenfrackenmumblesmrf! (I'm trying to clean up my language)

OK, look for Woman's Floral Lace Trim Dresses and Women's Floral Calf Length Dresses. And believe me, they are not too flowery.

And YES Geekbabe, it's really bad out there. Either you are supposed to dress like Britney or The Golden Girls. :p Jeans are either WAY up your waist or WAY down your butt.

The number one rule is COMFORT. No matter how 'cute' the outfit might be, if you can't feel confident and comfortable in it, it's no good.

I just came to the realization too that I can't gain any weight.
I eat a lot every day, but I don't gain anything.
All those nutrients just got wasted on who knows what.
I gave up.
