ok here is what happened. i was in my school parking lot (im at school now posting from a MAC =\ ) and im strolling through looking for a spot to park when all of a sudden this truck backs right into my passenger door! nothing big, he dented the door in and scratched up the side. i got some info from him, like name, phone, insurance name, insurance number, insurance number, and license plate. is that all the info i needed? what else should i have gotten from him? i know i should have got his drivers license number but i forgot. anything else i forgot?

here are some pics http://www.buujin.com/temp/car/

That'll work, call his insurance company, tell them that he hit you, and they'll have you talk to his insurance agent. The agent will call him to verify the story, then they'll want to get an estimate on the damage to the car, then they should pay to get it fixed.

Sorry buddy, you have to get license number at scene of accident. Almost all states otherwise void liability by the person who hit you. SUcks eh? Too bad I'm making that up. You're set 🙂

Usually a police report recording the information from both parties is a good idea, that way if he decides to change his story later and say it was your fault then you have written documentation of his original statement. Sortof too late for that now, but otherwise it looks like you got pretty much everything you need. A police report probably isn't really necessary in this instance since its just a minor accident anyways.

you should ask to see his driver's license to take down his address and number. and his insurance policy number. surprise that you know took down his name w/o asking to see his driver's license. how do you know that's his real name? or that's his real phone number?

I think you can call the police and ask to file a police report.

Skoorb, you scared the crap outta me! man you like torturing people huh? crazy canadians!!!

he seemed cool so i think everything will work out OK. i've estimated the damage to be around 200-300 dollars. not bad.

wat kind of info can you get from just having a license plate? im pretty sure i can get the po-po to knock at his door with just his license plate number. if he decided to crap on me and give me fake info.. that would be considered hit and run no?

School Property is private property. No accident report is needed unless there was an injury or the damage is above a state set minimum or a crime was committed.

You should have collected any names of witnesses and always carry a disposable camera for just this circumstance. Without picts or witnesses, it's his word against yours.

Hope the other driver is honest!

Public school property certainly isn't private property. Regardless, I still think you could call the police and ask to come file a police report about a car accident you were involved in. The accident report might not be NEEDED, but it's sure good to have.

Cops don't always file reports/write tickets. In Maryland, they won't do anything unless someone goes to the hospital. The lady I rear-ended was whining to the cop to write me a ticket, he wouldn't do it. Just had us exchange info and wrote his badge number on a piece of paper in case we needed to contact him.

Concerning Tominators comment on the state minimum of damage...it's really, really hard to judge that. Some states have a law saying that you need to call the cops if it's over $1000 in damage. If you haven't ever been in a fender bender, it's hard to judge what exactly it takes to get $1000 in damage.

I say this from a recent experience I had. My hatchback got bumped into in a parking lot. It was dark and I couldn't really see a whole lot of damage so I didn't think it would have been too bad of a fix. Turns out I had nearly $2500 in damage done from on little 5MPH dinger. DOH!

When in doubt, call the cops. The last thing you want happening is the person not to file the claim and stick you with the bill!

It certainly is not public property.

It is considered private property in the State of Illinois for the purpose of accident reports by the
police. ANY parking lot accident falls into this category.

Ahhh the truth comes out--in Illinois.

Just FYI, it's a bad idea to make blanket statements about legalities.

Here in NJ, a public school is public property. You get into a car accident in the public school and it's no different than getting into an accident on the street.
There is a cop who serves my HS and he has written tickets and reports for things that occur in the school parking lot.
If you park illegally on the campus of The College of New Jersey, you will be written a real parking ticket. They won't actively chase you, but if you try to sell the car, when you go to transfer the title they will tell you you have outstanding fines and won't re-title it until you've paid up.

Finally, I dunno what the deal is in IL, but an incident is an incident regardless of if it happens on private or public property. You're telling me that if you ram someone in the parking lot at Food Lion a cop can't come? That's pretty amazing. I can imagine the implications of "It happened on private property so we can't get involved."

I'd check up on that.

Finally, I don't know how it is for IL, but in NJ you can file a police report for almost anything. It serves simply as documentation that you are alleging something happened. I once got a series of crank calls and filled out a police report. Basically, if my caller called back, the report meant that there is now a pattern of activity and could take that to the phone company.

Edit: and I still don't see how it being private or public property for the purposes of the report has anything to do with whether or not you can file a report to begin with.

I had a similar accident where I was at a bank, I backed out of my spot, was stopped, and another car backed up into my door. The accident investigator (localcop w/o authority) came out and accused me of hurrying out of my spot (Because I was a teenager and the guy who hit me was in his 50's). I was driving a sports car and he was in a econobox. The cop said because they didn't see it they had to write both of us a ticket or neither of us. I didn't want a ticket, so, I said fine to 0 tickets.

The insurance company for the guy who hit me later called and asked for more info. I told them I was completely stopped and saw him backing up and he hit me. There were no scratches (if I were moving, his trailer hitch would have scratched across the door). Fortunately, they didn't make a hassle about it and paid for the repairs... well... they wanted to just replace the door skin and not the whole door. Then when I got it back there was a big scratch in the window and I Was able to get them to replace that as well. (Then about 2mo's later my care was stolen and totaled. And I only had 1payment left on it! )

Anyway, If I had gotten some witnesses names I would have been better off, but, in the end it turned out ok. Always get as much info as you can though, you never know who's going to change their story later on. And the more info you have to back up your side of things the better off you are. I never thought about keeping a disposable camera in the car, but, that's a really good idea if I can remember not to let the film expire.

Hope it all turns out ok. Good Luck!

I believe a college might be different than a high school in this respect. And then I'm sure it depends on the level of cooperation as the college can 'make laws' that are more stringent than could not be enforced elsewhere. Some campuses employ their own 'police force.'

The cops always have the option of a report. The only time it is absolutely neccessary is on a public roadway and then unless it is fairly serious, even that can be optional and dependent upon circumstance and requirements under state law.

Ouch! That's gonna leave a bad crease and on a purty red car....that sucks!

🙁
