just got wireless

Curious even with 802.11b is it gonna be slower on downloading from the net? I am getting around 1-2mb with wireless(on speed tests) and on a wired computer on the same router I'm getting almost 3mb which is what I have with charter. Is this normal for 802.11b and will it effect my downloads? Maybe I should have bought a G? Only paid $12 shipped for it used with no rebates(Netgear MR814v2).
 
says my signal is excellent and I'm in the same room with the router. I'm a newb when it comes to wireless.

any tips?
 
BTW this is a laptop so I am guessing PCI cards with antennas will get a better signal from long distances than a laptop card with internal antennas? Or no?
 
The 11mbps is the theoretical bandwidth. It is sort of like the SATA's 150Mbps throughput, but does it ever reach it? nah. You might see a hit on downloading, but at 3mbps downloading you shouldn't see a huge difference unless they were ubber-sized files.
 
Would a PC with a PCI wireless card and a external antenna get a better signal from a longer distance than a laptop with a internal antenna card? Also is there anything I should enable to help with security?
 
my laptop with the Intel 2200BG gets better signal then my desktop with a wireless NIC card.

actually it is. read a review sometime. you should be getting anywhere from 1-3mbits from your 802.11b connection. If it is a card/router combo that supports a double bandwidth standard, you may get double that..
 
Depends on what you are downloading. Surfing the web should not be any slower. Downloading files may be but that is also related to the speed of your hard drive rotation. I've noticed if I run a speedtest on dslreports.com that it is slower than a computer on a wired connection.

Well I am sure the laptop has a 4200RPM(most likely little less) and the desktop has a 7200RPM in it. Could that be it? What are some of you on 802.11b getting when d/ling big files(game demo)from a good server?

You have more latency issues on wireless, and that can affect your speed to a degree. However, even if you have a broadband connection that gives you 3mbps down, the reality is most professionally configured webservers throttle you below that anyway.

Bandwidth testing sites do not, as their aim is to test the top speed of your connection, not to suppport the maximum simultaneous users possible ala web server/ftp.

Actually it isn't. It's the maximum you can get really, not theoretically.

Indeed it is theoretical... just like the 54mbps is a myth.

Indeed it's a real maximum, not theoretical. Limitting factors in things as slow as 802.11b would be drivers, tcp/ip stacks, and protocols.
 
But indeed 802.11b never reaches 11Mbps in the real world.

And g never reaches 54Mbps either.

that rautor is not that good I Have one in my desk here it died after 6 months on me.

Well all because yours died doesn't mean all of them suck. Maybe yours was defective or died from power issues? I'll probably just use it and get a G router on down the road when I decide to buy some wireless cards.
