http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=383&#DGL-3420

that is the item i just got as a gift. i'm trying to figure out how to use it. i'm trying to use it as a wireless adapter to connect my PC to my home wireless network. the modem/router is connected to another PC in my home.

the instructions tell me to connect (power cable to wall & ethernet cable from box to computer) it to "a computer". then it tells me to go to http://192.169.0.30 to set it up online.

i've connected it to my computer which has an old usb wireless adapter that i'm replacing w/ this. normal web pages work, but i cannot go to http://192.168.0.30 like they say. i get the usual page cannot be found/displayed w/ IE.

Is it required that i connect this to the PC that is directly connected to the modem/router? to configure? then bring it to my PC to use?

You need to statically set your wired NIC that is connecting to this box to 192.168.0.20 or something like that with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Then, set it up for your network to talk to your wireless router (SSID & encryption key) and set the IP to DHCP, then hit save and set your NIC back to DHCP and that should do it for you.

You have to disconnect the USB and configure the computer to a static IP of the same subnet as the card (like 192.168.0.10).

Then the computer would talk to the new adapter and you can configure the adapter to an IP of your current Router's subnet.

Then put the computer back as it was with the USB to Auto Obtain.

Edit: Seems that I type too slow Kevin already provided the answer

I got one of these too, and my goal was to connect multiple computers using a switch. I got it working and everything (one desktop connected to switch, switch connected to bridge), but when I try connect another machine to the switch, it doesn't work. What gives?

I've seen no indication that the DGL-3420 supports multiple clients. Try power-cycling your computers, the DGL, and the switch. If that doesn't work, then it's probably just not supported.

The D-Link DAP-1522 will do what you want, at greater cost.

An Asus WL-520gU running DD-WRT in client bridge will also do this for standard-g only, at lower cost and higher difficulty.
