$380.00 + $25 (shipping)

IBM ThinkPad 600 (Pentium II 266MHz, 128MB ram, 24X CDROM, 6.4GB hd, 56K modem, floppy, 13.3" XGA Active Matrix LCD, integrated stereo sound, USB, 2 PCMCIA slots, battery, AC)

useless? good deal? who cares? lol

I saw it going for $500 to $600 elsewhere refurbished and we needed a computer capable of running Win98 to enter records with so I've be looking for some deals...

I wasn't really expecting to win this one (just testing the pricing waters) and I just happened to win it, so here I am with this psedo-unexpected notebook.

I figure it will run Windows XP and I like the XGA screen, which isn't common on older notebook computers in my experience.

looks like a fine deal to me, allthough i would have gone for a cheap desktop to fill that job only because they are easy to repair/upgrade and find parts for.
don't know how well it would do with xp but what the hell, give it a try

Windows XP most likely won't recognize half its hardware, as is sometimes the case with older notebooks.
Try it, especially if you can find the drivers for it.

I normally think of it in terms of RAM - 64MB Win98, 128MB Win2k, 256MB WinXP... But you can probably add more RAM to it, SODIMMs aren't too expensive these days.

Except for the processor rather nice, smallish screen.

It's a decent buy, considering eBay. If it is fully functional.

That's not too bad of a deal. You can do the internet and connect new devices to it. I wouldn't run WinXP on it cause it will hog alot of your hard drive and be slow cause of your ram and cpu combo. You could run Win2k probably with not much problem. Overall, it's not a bad little machine. Too bad it doesn't have a dvd and then it would be an even better deal.. can you say movies to go? 🙂

Stealth1024, as others have pointed out, I too think it's a pretty good deal. As for running XP, I wouldn't advise that option, but would definately suggest W2K as Mavrick007 pointed out. Hope my vote helps 🙂

My PII 366 w/ 128MB of RAM runs XP fine, but it's definately a battery hog and yes, slower response than my normal systems. I have it dual booting with Linux though.

You might think about going that route as well, it's easier on the battery and you could gain some experience.

Since the rest of the computers on my network are running WinXP (including the one sharing the printer, although the one with the modem is running Win98..) will I have networking problems are far as sharing folders, accessing data on other machines, printing to the WinXP machine from the notebook if I put Win98 on it, etc.?

If that thing came with a wireless ethernet card so I could add it to my wireless network I'd be in business! lol

No, you won't have any problems networking with Win98 and printing from the notebook to the WinXP machine.
Win98 would work well on the machine and save some valuable hd space for other apps too.

I have one, 366Mhz, 288MB, 12GB, 24X and Xircom NIC/56k. I paid $675 on this board eight monthes ago. Battery life is 2 hours with wireless card, 3 hours without. It really depends on the condition of the battery though. DVD drives and batteries are available on ebay. Dislikes, it's an older laptop so it's slow (bootup especially) and the display isn't very bright. The picture in the auction is deceptive since it's in low ambient light. For $400 shipped it's a good deal, Thinkpads are built to last. BTW, Win2k loads up all the default drivers so XP should as well.

The Thinkpad 600's are great machines. I have used them for several years.

I bought a Thinkpad 390X here that is a PIII 450 with 192 RAM that runs XP pretty well. I use Peachtree, IE, Word, etc. with it and it is not slow at those, but yeah boots up kind of slow. Plus with a wireless LAN I can sit on the hammock by the lake and surf the net 🙂
