just got the raptor installed

ok i have the raptor up and running now...all i can say is wow...best upgrade i've done so far besides going to a gig o ram

i timed my boot at 2 minutes exactly before i installed the raptor a few minutes ago...imaged the exact same windows install to the raptor...new time is 1:04

pretty impressive 😀

windows is a lot snappier as well...if you dont have one...get it...you won't be dissapointed...btw the old hdd was a 7200rpm 8meg maxtor...so its not like i'm going from a 5400rpm drive or anything

I know this is not the answer you want, but I recently copied my Seagate to my new Raptor and used Norton Ghost. I did everything right within Windows, and it works perfectly now.

I  Ghost!

10,000rpm drives...means way faster transfer and better seek times...

only thing faster so far as i know besides solid state is 15K scsi..and thatll cost ya an arm and a leg...

this drive is actually quieter than the maxtor...if it shits imma be pissed

I have two 80GB 7200rpm 8mb Western Digitals in a striped array (RAID0) and boy let me tell you, you want fast. Photoshop loads in about 3-4 seconds. Windows in about 25-30. The system takes about 3-5 seconds to wake up from hibernation. RAID-0 rules

I thought those 10k RPM drives only came in small capacities such as 74GB for some reason.

$$$

EDIT:

If they lower the price and make 10k cost-effective, it would essencially bring about the obsolescence of the 5.4k and 7.2k drives.

I wouldn't call ~5Mb/sec faster transfer rate than my Seagate 200Gb "way faster". 69Mb/sec here on HDTach...

The only real advantage with a Raptor is the seek time, which will be demolished by a decent SCSI 15krpm drive anyway.

Hell, my 10kII would eat one for breakfast..that said, my 10kII is in a box upstairs....
I don;t have enough space in my XPC for the adaptec 19160 ultra160card🙁

how much are they for approx?

A raptor?! That is a desktop harddrive..hell, it'd probably set your laptop blaze if you tried...

..assuming that you used a crowbar to pull back the plastic and make the 3.5'' drive fit in the 2.5'' bay

yeah but what will you pay by the time you get a good scsi controller and match the storage capacity of the raptor?

i'd be willing to bet more than what you would pay for two of the raptors...and then you can raid0 them and get better performance in some stuff...and before you start with the flaming, i know it doesnt help in everything

basically, since most mobos have onboard sata, its an easy(read: cost effective) way to get better performance out of your hdd...
