EDIT: Ok... looks like DD-WRT is just for Linux folks... Nothing for me to see here... Moving along...

So... Just hook it up and go... Any other comments?

-----------------

Purchased on recommendation from others here on it's range, reliability and speed (in order of importance to me).

One thing that kept coming out was to "flash" it with DD-WRT or soemthing like that. As far as networking goes, I'm a dolt, but know enough to know it's probably a good idea...

Are there any instructions for doing this procedure and making sure I get the right firmware version, etc? I'd like to get it up and running ASAP...

BTW, I would have just continued my previous post answered bby JackMDS, but it seems posts that drop off page 1 just disappear...

Thanks for help.

dd-wrt isn't just for linux people, but if you don't need the features stick with the stock for now. IIRC buffalo's default wasn't that bad.

Caveman use the Router for few days as is.

If you are happy and does not need any additional functions then keep using the Router with the stock firmware.

If you do need addtional features look at the DD-WRT features, and the Tomato features.

If the feature are available with Tomato, use Tomato.

Why? Because with the Buffalo Router it is much easier to Flash Tomato, and Tomato might run few % faster.

Otherwise use DD-WRT.

Thanks for help!!!

I love this thing!!! Got it hooked up tonight and went well right out of the box...

Went from signal strength "extremelly low" (1 bar) with dropouts, etc to very high (4 bars). Yay!!!

A few questions:

1) I'm assuming my laptop (Gateway 6880FX) does not have AOSS... This sounded like a hardware option on the "client device" (laptop in my case). I'd love to use this if I could... Perhaps installing the client software would allow? My guess is that AOSS is much faster for security unlike WEP 13 character which was configure manually? What are the advantages to AOSS?

2) I think I'll probably just be sticking with stock firmware... I don't even know what "features" one can have with tomato, etc... Where is the best way to learn about features and what they do?

3) One feature that looked interesting is port forwarding for gaming... I do some gaming, what does this feature do?

4) If I have established a hardware and wireless connection on my laptop, what connection will the laptop default to? Does it pick the fastest (wired)?

Thanks again everyone...

Oh, and does anyone know why threads that drop of page 1 can't be seen?

The dd-wrt and tomato websites are probably the best places to see what features they add. Probably not a whole lot for most people.

Some games might require it. It will allow someone to make a connection to a machine behind the router from the outside. Check with the games you play for information on whether this is necessary. I've seen FAQs or support articles for some games a while back on whether this was necessary and the basics on how to set it up for that game.
