Just got St. Anger by Metallica

Maybe I haven't heard enough nu-metal or something but St. Anger doesn't sound like any of the Korn, Limp Bizcuit, Slipknot, disturbed, Stained or any of the other typical nu-metal I've run into on the radio.
I think it takes a musical ear to pick up on it... they've detuned thier guitars a ton... some people say to C, I don't know for sure cause I can't play by ear... but I can tell by listening to it, it's DEFINATELY not in standard tuning. They've probably got their guitars tuned to drop D, and use effects to drop everything another whole step. Cause if you play guitar, you know tuning to C makes the strings incredibly loose, even when using heavy guage strings... and you get a ton more fret buzz... and you don't hear that on this album... which is why I don't think their guitars themselves are tuned all the way down to C.

Wow... didn't expect this... last night I sent my friend all the songs on the CD... he listened to them, called me up to talk about it... I told him about the DVD, how it has a performance of every song on the CD... so he went out and bought the CD so he could have the DVD which is recorded in Digital Dolby 5.1.
See, Metallica (more specifically, Lars)... sharing music isn't a BAD thing... if I hadn't send my friend the songs, he never would have bought the CD.

its not bad. Definately some weak tracks, but a few that kick serious ass. Definately not Puppets era good.

Don't listen to anyone who hasn't listened to it for more than 10 times. They'll say it sounds like sh*t.
Why should anyone waste their time listening to that awful crap 10 times? It's music, for God's sake, not brainwashing. And some of the worst music I've heard in a long time at that. Ranks right down there with Van Halen III.
You sound like the perfect pop music fan. You know, the type who likes the song if it appeals to them right away, then after it gets played on the radio 37 times a day, you start to get sick of it. Then you just move to the next thing that sounds good to you. In 10 years, you will say... ahh I remember that song. I can't believe I liked it.

Sound about right?

How many times have you (or any supposed real MetallicA fan - old or new stuff) tried to listen to it? You're supposed to be devoted to the band, give it more of a chance and quit being with the other sheep. I'll be blunt, it sounded like $#!T to me at first too. After I put it on repeat while working on my machine, it sounds pretty good (sans whacked lyrics/vocals). It's like a good movie... you miss things the first time around. Get the old MetallicA out of your head and listen to this album for what it really is. If you don't like the new sound, it doesn't mean they suck, it means you don't like the style - period.

Go to a concert and tell me they still suck, talent-wise. I'm so sick of people throwing catch-phrases around and sounding like every other 14-year old stealing opinions from their friends.

I think this CD is going to mark the beginning of a new generation of the distribution of music. You buy a CD for $10, as it's selling at Best Buy and other places, and you also get a DVD of the band rehearsing the songs in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround, and a cd-key that lets you onto a website where you can download pictures, videos, and MP3s of past concerts, as well as whatever interesting things fans send in to have posted on the site. It makes the record company happy because they sell millions of records, it makes the band happy because they get paid, and it makes fans happy because they get all these "value-added bonuses".

Whether you like or hate Metallica, you have to give them credit for this kind of innovation. Who would have thought that the band so against something like Napster would embrace technology like this?

And if another band has already executed this idea, I didn't know, so don't flame me.

Some bands have done similar things... but as you said, I think by Metallica doing it, it will start a trend. Before it's mainly been lesser known bands, like I believe Prong had a DVD included with one of their CD's. Metallica pretty much had to do it though because of Napster. If all they did was offer a CD... people can download CD's easily. Now, the DVD, that supposedly a bonus, is BETTER than the CD because it's higher sound quality, plus you can WATCH them play. Plus the bonuses online... Metallica had to offer something you couldn't download and share easily... and they did that with the DVD, and with the online bonus stuff. I haven't gotten a chance to look at what's online because the site has been clogged up since it opened. Keeps timing out. But anyway... I think Metallica started something good here with the DVD in 5.1 dolby.

I know that they tuned everything down. That wasn't what I meant thoug. 😉 If you listen to St. Anger and then listen to any of the nu-metal bands on the radio there is a sizable difference between them (sound, song structure, lyrics, vocals). St. Anger doesn't sound anymore like a Disturbed album than Master of Puppets or Justice sound like a Motley Crue album.

I completely agree.

well tower records had it for $11.99 today so i caved in and bought it. i must say, when you watch them play the songs on the dvd you definately get a better "metallica" feel for the songs. i think they are growing on me. but based on how many different guitars they used, the used lots of different tunings. the metallica vault is nice too, i've downloaded about 10 tracks (so far) and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

I can't get the Vault website to load. Can anyone usin Comcast Cable get it to load?

Well it loaded finally, but it won't accept my user name and pw....

It is indeed tuned to drop C.

Eww... why would you play with 9's? Way too tinny for me.

I play with 10 - 46's.

You're kidding right?
I'm not going to bother to defend my massive music collection or my love for 70s rock... or the fact that I have seen Metallica three times in concert (last time during Justice tour, they're a good concert but not the best - Rush holds that title and for good reason). Nor am I going to go into just how much I fscking hate pop music.
This album speaks for itself. Hetfield's voice (no old skool Metallica fan would call him "Jaymz"
rolleye.gif
) is gone. The lyrics are whack. The rhythm and riffs are whack. The guitars are de-tuned to the point of sounding like sh!t. The lack of solos is almost anti-Metallica. And the production quality is almost amateur.
My GF said it best when I first played it - "They're trying to recapture something they've lost forever."
Face it, this new album is their worst ever.

If you don't like it, then you don't like it.. That doesen't mean it's their worst album ever.

James calls himself Jaymz, so that's not much of a stretch nor a big deal.

Like it or not, it is their musical vision, not yours. You can't say how it's supposed to sound, you can only say if you like it or not. If you don't like it, there's nothing wrong with that - don't listen to it.

I swear, people think bands are their own personal slaves. That's the only explination for how many of you speak.

I agree, the album speaks for itself. You can not compare it to old Metallica. Stop.. Now. It is it's own musical vision. It follows the tradition of every other Metallica album - completely different. That's more than you can say about most other bands.

They haven't tried to recapture anything. If that's what they were trying to do, it would sound like a NWOBHM album - the stuff they listened to, the stuff that made them want to play.

I somewhat agree on some of your points, like the no guitar solos.. admittedly, that is disappointing.. But I'm not going to say the album sucks because of that. They made the album sound the way they wanted it to sound, and I respect that.

I can respect it, too, but it doesn't mean I have to say I like it. Some of the songs sound ok so far, but I really, really, HATE the drum sound, particularly the snare. Damn thing almost sounds like a big cowbell sometimes. It totally ruins it for me.
Don't like the guitar sound they're getting for quite a bit of the record, but at least it isn't a whole album of "Nothing Else Matters" and such.
I also agree that Hetfield's voice is a mere shadow of what it once was, but hell, if anyone abused their vocal cords like he had to all these year, they wouldn't sound the same either.
I will have to agree with whomever it was that said they thought the production was amateurish. I would say it sounds underproduced.
If that's what they were trying for, they did it.
I'd like to hear some of this played live to see how it sounds that way.

I was arguing against somebody who gave the new album apparently 1 chance and decided on it for life... a band that he apparently looked up to at one point.

Personally (I did say it sucked the first time around), I had about 4 hours of conference calls for work today... but all the other hours (and even right now), it's playing TOO loud through my home theatre system. 😉 I LOVE more than half the album. Strange how things grow on you. A few "hardcore" sounding songs I do not like - maybe my brother will...

MetallicA = rEvolutionaries
