Just got Quake 3. It's complaining about the OpenGL subsystem. Help!

K6-2 + Banshee.

Q3 says some crap about the opengl subsystem when I try to start it... What can I do to make it work? :D

Try running GL setup whilst connected to the internet...

You don't have dual monitors or anything like that do you?

looks to me like you need GLsetup.

btw, a banshee and a k6-2 is going to be down right vomit-inducing in quake3.

Christ I can't f&cking download this stupid freakin driver!!!! I've tried several times.. It goes fine at 5+KB/s for about 400-800KB, then it just FREAKIN QUITS on me!! :| :| :|

WTF... The file is dgp-9x-304.exe. If anybody has it or can get it and send it to me on icq, I'd be greatful. If you're too lazy to click the flower, my ICQ UIN is 5935798. ;)

DAMNIT!

The DL made it to 60% this time... and it's quit again! ahhhhhhhhhh I'm going to go insane!!! I am blaming this on my DSP modem! :p

..... no, wait, it's started up again!! *phew*! it better finish!

I've downloaded drivers from there before, they say you're better off downloading the drivers from the manufacturer of your specific board.. those other drivers will WORK, but they're not the best choice I think.

And when I DID use those, there were problems, so I'll stick to the guillemot drivers. 77% now... blasted Dialup, why can't i just have cable :(

:p

Ahhhh crapppp.....

Seems it's stopped at 81% now... It better continue!!

This is getting on my nerves!! It shouldn't take hours to get a friggen driver!

WTF?

How the heck do you think that would help? It doesn't CLOSE, it just STOPS going. THe DL is still there, just "lagging".

Anyway, I already had a new banshee driver, I just had to install it, so I did... Quake III works now.

640x480 and 1024x768 seem equally fast, as do low and high detail, what gives?

And what the hell is this? I closed Quake III and my comp is lagging now! UT never did that, and multitasking with it was fine.

I think I will still prefer UT over Quake III. BTW, I don't know how to run the benchmarks in Q3 but it looked to be 15-30fps (in all res and qualities, didn't seem to change).

How fast is your CPU? Back in my K6-2 350 days, I had the same frame rate from 320x200 up to 1280x1024.

I had a K6-2 300 and a banshee for 2 years, so i know how to get q3a running very nicely, although you'll have to turn a ton of things off. But i used to easily get about 50fps with my setup. Thank god i got a new computer since then : )

and btw, the 3dfx reference drivers ARE the best drivers to use. dont' listen to what windows says when you try to install the drivers : )

I'm using the 3dfx reference drivers.. I have a 412.5MHz K6-2/'350' with PCI Banshee.

OK, guide me to my 50fps please ; )

A download manager, like GetRight, would help because of the download did die, you could resume :)

No, it wouldn't help in this case... You don't understand, lol. Guess I'm just not good at explaining.

I'm no longer using that computer, but i'll try to piece together everything I can remember...

1.) Set resolution to 640x480
2.) Both color depths to 16bit
3.) geometry detail to LOW
4.) Lighting to VERTEX
5.) Texture detail either all the way down, or one notch up
6.) (i don't remember the exact command) type in console cg_gibs 0 - this will turn off excessive gibs

Under the game options

7.) set dynamic lighting to OFF
8.) marks on walls to OFF
9.) ejecting brass to OFF
10.) Force player models to ON
11.) high quality sky to OFF

With this setup, you should easily be able to push about 50fps in a timedemo. It might not look pretty, but it will run acceptable

There might be a few things i'm forgetting. Q3A isn't a game i run all that often. And if anyone else can think of some options to help in performance, post them here. You can turn sound quality to LOW if you'd like, but i wouldn't recommend it. Just make sure A3D and music is OFF

Thanks alot, I'll try those out..

BTW, it's just annoying, cuz I saw 300fps in UT on a Duron 600/V3..

DONT FLAME ME, I didn't say it sustained 300fps, I said I saw it... ;) still, it was 60-120 very frequently and I don't believe it ever went below 40 :( rghh...

LOL. About 2 years ago i made quake2 run at 350fps on my voodoo1. Sure, it ran at 350fps, but that was when i made my own level (one cube), walked into a corner, used FOV 1 and ran at 320x200. But can i play like that? I might need to augment my vision a bit...
