I pay $60 for Comcast Internet, DSL is $17.99 a month! I wanted a cheaper rate with Comcast so I threatened to cancel and go with DSL.

Me: Hi, I'd like to cancel my high speed internet service:
Comcast: Sure, what's the reason?
Me: I'm going with DSL, it's cheaper.
Comcast: Okay, when did you want to do that?
Me: I was going to switch as soon as possible.
Comcast: Alright, hold on one second.
Me: ...
Comcast: Okay, your service will end by tomorrow and we'll stop billing you.
Me: /me Goes signs up for DSL...

Well then, I guess I'll be internetless at home for a couple days. :frown:

The straightforward approach is the best.

I got my bill via email today and I just called them up and said that I wanted to see if I could get a better deal on my cable and internet. I told them that I didn't need 8mbit download or anything over 3mbits. I also have basic cable service and I told them that I was tired of paying 46.95 for friggin basic cable full of shopathome networks.
The guy told me that its better that I call next month since thats when most of their promotions will take place. The dude nevertheless gave me basic cable and internet for $60/month after the call. I was paying 92 bucks before.

You shouldn't have told 'em to cancel; you should have said, "I have cable HSI, but DSL is a lot cheaper and I'm thinking of switching. Is there anything you can do to lower the price?" I did that and they knocked $35 off my TV and Internet bill each month, no questions asked.

You suck at negotiating. You told them you wanted to cancel when what you wanted was a lower rate.
Negotiating rule #1..... ASK for what you want first. Save the drastic moves for last.

apparently I suck at social engineering. Oh well, saving $40 a month on internet that I barely use is cool either way.

Someone that works for the comcast call center told me to do this.
He said according to their "flowchart" for cancellations that's what I was supposed to say.

I'm surprised lots of people dn't switch. ROadrunner doesn't offer multiple rates (faster, slower, etc) that I konw of and charges at least $35/mo. DSL here through AT&T/SBC is now only $13/mo. I'd switch but I actually use the 5meg down sometimes...

You could always call Comcast backup and reschedule your disconnection date...

Then that was bad advice. I called Comcast 3 months ago before my promo rate was to end and got an additional 3 months extension, simply by saying I feel like they should cut me some slack since it didn't work for the first week, but the billing sure did. They kicked down some more time. My new plan is to pay for 3 months then repeat the process during a promo period.

It's odd that they just scheduled your cancellation date like that. When I call to cancel a service like that I'm usually asked what day I want to cancel.

Call those Comcast devils back, and ask why a new customer can get service for $29 for 6 months, but when you called the person you spoke with did nothing to try to keep your business?

My pings last night were 600ms going to Google. I'm not taking advantage of their 8mpbs down any way so cheaper High Speed would make sense for me.

This happened to me too, when I was with Comcast and was changing to Surewest. I was paying $60 a month, asked them what they could do, but they said they couldn't offer me anything. So I left the bastards.

Fiber optics 10mb/10mb for $48 FTW!

You may not get 3mb with your dsl, and may not like the 1.5mb. At least then you will still have internet.

Called them last month inquiring if they had a special promo for cable and HSI. Cable from $93 to 64, HSI $52 to $29. So I'm saving about $52 for only 6 months, $312.

I used to do that with Roadrunner. I'd call up any time I saw a good special and say that I wanted the new price and if I had to they could cancel me and sign me back up. most of the time they'd just give me the deal. Then they changed their system and I didn't even have to threaten to quit. THey'd just set me up with the new plan without any argument at all.

But now we have a deal through work so it's $35/mo for 5down .25up or so.

We got a plan for comcast that was super cheap (silver digital tv package and internet for like 60 bucks a month for 3 months, then it was supose to go up for 3 months, then up again, then normal price). The thing is, they having increased the rate and it has been almost a year. Once they do increase the rate I definatly wont let them back bill me, and I"m going to drop the digital tv because its pixialted as hell and on demand skips and goes out all the time on the weekends, but not durring the week.

$13/mo for speeds only double or triple of dialup is not the same as $45/mo for speeds upwards of 100x dialup and more. The price is worth it.
