Just got off the phone with Phillips. Is it true what he told me about burners?

They can't be set as 'slave'?I told him my burner suddenly stopped being recognized on my system (after a year of working good). So I put it in another system and that one didn't recognize it either. So I called Phillips to see about a replacement (no, because I bought it 13 months ago...1 month past warranty). So I asked him if there was anything else I could do besides chuck it and he asked me how I had it configured. I told him 2 hard drives as Primary master and slave, CD-ROM as Secondary master, and the burner as Secondary slave. He said, "That's your problem, burners can't be set as slaves." Is that true?
 
no... what he told you is definitely not true. as a matter of fact, mine's a slave, and it works just fine.
 
They can be set as slaves, but it's better setting it as master. Just because it's set as slave doesnt mean it wont work.
 
Every burner I've ever owned, including my Philips PCW1208 is set as a slave. Never had a problem. This, however, is an issue with some DVD-ROM drives. I would guess that maybe the tech is mistaken and is confusing the two.
 
I had my burner set as slave for about 2 years, no major problems, a few coasters and i could only copy CD's at 4x. Recently i changed it to master just for grins, and before when it was slave i could rip a song in about 5 minutes, which was terrible so i never ripped with it, since i set it as master, it rips a song at 320 kbps in 35 seconds or less. I'm sure thats not really relevant to your situation, but i thought it was kinda strange that it would make a difference. anyone know why it would do that?
 
Thanks guys. I thought it sounded kind of strange. Just for the hell of it I think I'll set it up as master anyways and see if it'll be recognized.

With SCSI, they're all on the chain gang 😉.
 
It may be true depending on the drive. I had an old smart and friendly 2X and it would not work set as slave.

All the other burners I have had didn't seem to care how it was set.

No go. Still wouldn't get recognized even with it set as master. It has power because the tray ejects fine. In the trash it goes (unless someone here wants it). 🙂

I'd call Philips again before trashing it. With just 4 weeks over the the warranty, they might be willing to do somthing for you if you complain loud enough. I'd certainly treat them to a few choice expletives if this had happened to me 😉.
 
I would try using a different IDE-cable
sounds like the drive is fine but you have some strange problem getting your pc to SEE it ....

Did you try playing with your Bios?
Does your Bios see the drive?
Is the other drive on this IDE channel recognized?
 
Two different systems dude. That's 2 different cables, 2 different BIOS's, etc.

You had your SCSI drive as the slave, eh? What IDE channel was it on, and what SCSI to IDE converter were you using?
