Just got my Ti4200, I would have benchmarks but.....[updated-Problem Solved]

I almost crapped my pants when i hears my card had arrived, so i went and put the thing in immediatly, followed the drill for drivers and such, and then flipped the switch.

Booted up just fine, goes into windows just fine, so i think "hey, the peeps @ the forums will probably want some benchies", so i run 3dmark2k1, and when it barely got into the first test, BAM! total system cash!. So I reset and try again, BAM! crashed again! I was like "oh no, please no, let the damn thing work!", so i ran dxdiag, and everything went fine there. Then I decide to try some Jedi Knight II, and not 10 seconds into that it crashed too! I'm crashing in both DX and OGL apps!!

I tried the drivers from gainward, and the ones from Nvidia, no difference.

My specs.

ASUS K7V (KX-133 chipset), Latest bios, latest 4in1 drivers.
SB Live! X-Gamer
Athlon 900Mhz (Slot A, shuddup, i know it sucks)
512 PC133 SDR
Win2k SP2

Please can someone help, I dont want my 200$ investment to go to waste 🙁 :frown: 🙁

Hmm.. What was your video card before that?

Driver conflict, perhaps?

Edit: Damn.. DARRIN beat me to it. Oh well. Great minds think alike. 😀

Hope it's just a driver conflict. It couldn't be a bad card if you don't notice any deformities in the screen, and it actually plays something for a few seconds.

I wonder if Gainward had QC issues. I read some user comments @ newegg on the ti4xxx series and several claim they received a DOA card, or it has issues.

It may be the drivers but it could also be a bad card or maybe something to do with the cooling. Seesm kinda weird how you can play for a 10 seconds and then it crashes. Perhaps one of the heatsinks isn't making contact or something. I'd take the card out and give it a good look to make sure nothings wrong with it. Also try completely removing your old drivers and then reinstalling the card that might help. Nvidias drivers are usually rock solid so I'm thinking it's something else that's casuin your problems.

UPDATE:

I've done a clean format (gah), I will just finish up with reinstalling some programs and then I will try benchmarking again. If this persists I will check to see if the heatsink is properly placed.

Edit: Ok, ready to benchmark, PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAASSSSSSSEEEEE WORK!!!!!

You guys are not going to believe this.....but after it crashed (again, even after the format), i checked the cooling, and do you know what i found? NO COMPOUND! there was NOTHING between the cooling & the chip. I put some compound between the chip & heatsink

im now going to try once again, but im doubtful 🙁

crap...now i'm having doubts on purchasing one of the gainwards since my purchase will be a one way trip. i hope it's just that compound thing 'cause that will be easy to fix. good luck.

applying the compound FAILED, it still crashes! I even tried underclocking with the compound and it still crashed!

I need more ideas people, my patience is running VERY thin

If you check the video forum, a few people had problems with their Gainward GF 4 cards. I'm going to wait a while before buying a GF4 4200, probably a different GF4 maker. I currently have a LeadTek GF DDR, I had been very satisfied with it (until I bought Morrowind 🙂).

your best bet is to RMA it. Yeah, some people have recieved DOA cards from newegg that were made by Gainward. I doubt that Gainward is skimping though...hopefully not. Good luck bro.

*Problem Solved* .....sorta

Even though my power supply is 300 watts, it is still too weak, i tried it on my friends computer (identical to mine except he has a better power supply), and it ran flawlessly, so im going to go get a better power supply for this sucker.
