Alrighty, well i finally got mine up and running this morning...

First Impessions (coming from an Audiovox 5600): Meh.

The SQ on calls is superb, Speaker is top notch (music sounds excellent) and the FF is exactly what i was looking for. Reception is easily double what i got on my 5600.

Now to the downsides, the phone's interface just screams mediocre. I've never used a Moto interface before, but god, could they make it more bland and depressing? I was literally bored with the phone the moment i turned it on.

Also, as others have said, if you have medium/large fingers, you'll have trouble dialing. I guess my fingers are a little too big, because i find dialing to be a chore on this phone.

So overall, i dunno if im gonna keep it. The interface, while im sure can be changed more than what the phone gives ya, is just boring. I don't want a 2 year contract to be wasted on a mediocre phone, not that the interface means that much, but it just feels like Cingular/Moto skimped on this phone. I may just pick up something else (2125 possibly), and pick up a L6 online as a backup phone for weekends, not a everyday user.

Also, the phone didnt fix one of my main problems with cingular right now (which i was hoping it would). When you call a party and either they can't hear you, or you can't hear them every few times. Hrmph.

Am i the only one w/ these sentiments? I guess i was expecting more. Other than the size and iTunes, i don't see this phone offering much to warrant its $199 price w/ 2 year contract. Maybe if the phone was $99 or less, i would feel differently, but for $200, i expect more.

Nice review. Though if the phone were to come to a CDMA company like Verizon, the interface would have been changed. I really want this phone. Right now I have the Razr from Verizon, and it is perfect.

You can't close the SLVR....

$299 direct from Cingular.

You can find unlocked (non cingular branded) ones on eBay for $250-275, but they won't usually have iTunes.

What company makes the handset for Cingular for that phone? Do you have it? Pretty good phone??

HTC makes it, its called the HTC Faraday.

I thought this was an issue with the Win 2003 mobile platform. I've never heard of that happening with a normal (non-smartphone) phone.

a friend has cingular and has gone through 4 phones with the same 'one side can't hear the other' issue.

it's really fscking annoying.

My review:

Personally I'm very happy with the SLVR. I find that it's more of an 'adult' phone. There's no 'DJ mixxer' or photo editor like on the Ericssons or other gimmicky crap. The camera is basic, but that's a good thing in my eyes as I have a decent slimline digi cam that actually takes good pics. no flash/light, no radio... a down to earth phone that's unobtrusive, and just does it's job nicely without making a song and dance of it.

Neat features:
The size
Ambiant light detector that lights up the keypad backlight when you walk into a dark place.
Expandable memory (up to 512 I believe)
Good features: bluetooth, java, camera, vid cam, web access.

Poor features:
You have to pay for extra software to sync the phonebook with your PC
You can't add words to the dictionary, I think...
Standard ringtones are a bit weak (slapped the 24 ringtone in there 😀 )

As for the OP's reference to the GUI, well I think that's functional and simple. You can skin it, but I'm not a fan of flashy, fancy interfaces. Like I said, it's more of a business/adult piece of kit rather than smething to appeal to younger generations...

Overall a top notch phone.

This has always been a problem with Motorola phones. Great design, terrible interface. And yet another stupid 100 song limit on iTunes? Dumb. I really like the looks of this phone, though.

Lol, I was just about to mention the audiovox smt5600, 😛 well I guess you did it for me!

Moto has unquestionably the worst interface of all cell phones. Nothing beats Nokia in that department. Actually, I don't thin anything beats Nokia period. My 6230 came with BT, IR, MP3, FM, MMC expansion slot (cheap memory cards), awsome battery life for a whole lot less then anyting that could even remotely compare in feature department.

If you want to improve reception of your Cingular phone, have it unlocked and reflashed with a developer firmware. There is a member here TimeKeeper who can fill you in on how it's done. I believe that developer version will give you a better interface too.
