i havent had a 4.0 since sixth grade.

this quarter i got

a C in electrical engineering, solid state devices
a C in math, numerical analysis
and an A- in ethical engineering.

every quarter i get grades and i think maybe i shouldn't have majored in this . i have a 2.664 gpa now, but i'm involved in some organizations and have leadership positions. i hope GPA isnt that important, some of my classes just have nothing to do with what i'm interested in doing.

anyways, the creator of this post, yeah thats great you have a 4.0 and you work, but i think you are some sort of super proud, i am such a cool guy working and school at the same time. even though that is admirable the tone you seem to have when you write about it makes you sound like you are some high and mighty god we should all be worshipping and well, if you ever worked for me, i'd have to fire your ass for being such a dick

<< I'm doing a BSc in CS >>

Ahh, that explains it. :)

Besides as was mentioned, the very fact that you think GPA makes a huge difference shows you must not have done a lot of interviewing yet. My GPA is around a 3.0 (BSEE from UMich, graduated today ironically enough) but I have offers from GE, Applied Materials, Cisco, HP, and the one I accepted from Dell starting there in February. The truth is, as long as you come from a competetive school or program, companies don't care about your GPA as long as it's not really bad. The interview is really what makes or breaks you.

Umm, you're not totally correct, lo5750ul. As long as you have at least a 3.4 average, any of those three companies that you mentioned will be willing hire you. I would know, as I work for one of them. As long as you meet the minimum GPA guidelines, your interviewer will be more interested in your personal goals, diversity of skills, and work experience. Big companies like to hire people who know their stuff, have experience in meeting deadlines, and are planning on sticking around for awhile.

The sad thing is that a 3.0 average USED to be good enough, back when good IT people were tough to find. Now, HR departments are being flooded with resumes, so companies have increased their guidelines to weed out the excess job hunters.

<< Lol, never thought this post would get any replies. :)

I'm not single and I'm doing a BSc in CS. Believe me, when you are looking to get a job with a well known company like Ford, HP, IBM etc, the difference between a 3.7 and a 4.0 is whether you get the job or not - so it does make a difference in some people's lives.

My first post was taking the piss out of those people who have no responsibilities and are complaining about their hard life where mommy and daddy provide everything for them.

lol, hans007, I was taking the piss out of the whiney brats on this board complaining about not being given this or that etc., those who get everything handed to them on a plate by their parents who only ask that their child study and do well in college.

With regards to GPA - the higher up the ladder you go, the more the GPA can make a difference. When a company is looking for the cream of the crop, they will look at GPA too.

Not really. The higher up the ladder, the more a company looks for relevent experience. (Assuming by higher up, you mean lead engineers and whatnot) They look for considerable technical expertise in whatever discipline they are hiring into and leadership skills. Though apart from people with Masters->PhD- level degrees with lots of experience, you will rarely see fresh college recruits being hired into upper-level positions.

One of the only fields where GPA may make a difference is CS. And that's because programmers are a dime-a-dozen. Companies don't want to spend the time and money screening through them so they may look at GPA for similarly qualified candidates who both score equally well in the interview. Though as I mentioned earlier, the interview is everything. For a company that is looking for a truly qualified candidate, their skills will show through in an interview far better than it will by their GPA, and they know this.

Again, not really. Most companies are looking for managers with leadership skills, or people who are good with coming up with ways of either cutting costs or increasing earnings. A 4.0 average isn't going to help you much if your fellow employees hate your guts, or you're constantly missing deadlines and overunning your project budgets.

The 4.0 average WILL help you get into a good college for your further education, which will help you get promoted. Although some technology CEO's out there are college dropouts, most of them either have an MBA or a PhD in their respected fields.

My g/f got her grades today as well. Another 4.0 semester, cumulative of 3.96. That one B her sophomore year still haunts her.

:D

I got a 4.0 too but I was only taking two classes. So mine doesn't count.

:p

lo5750ul,

We keep telling you that grades aren't as important as you think, and you continue to argue. Perhaps you should just take the majority's word for it. :)

Isn't straight A's a 4.0 GPA? So how can you get over 4.0? At least that's how it is in Canada..

What ethical engineering class did u take? I'm taking 195 next quarter...hopefully easy A :D

Anyways I got:

a C in Analog Circuits
a B- in Discrete Signal Processing
a A- in History of Asians in America
and jury's still out on digital design lab

suffice to say...humanities classes are a helluva lot easier than engineering classes =P

Oh...Hans...my overall gpa is around 2.9...so urs ain't spectacularly bad (oh and I got hired as an intern with Raytheon last summer with that GPA so no worries!)

But, but, but, my excuse is I work full-time too. :p

Great, no curfew, I can see all my friends and do whatever I want because I worked for it, no-one handed it to me on a plate.

I eat, attend school, sleep, nef and party and I managed to pull really nasty grade :(

GPA is basically THE most important factor in your high school career. At least that's what I believe based the conversations at my school. All anyone ever talks about (I'm a senior at one of the biggest public high schools in Michigan) is what their GPA/SAT/ACT scores were, what they got on their AP tests, etc. I'm pretty sick of it, but then again, I already got into college, so my grades aren't as important anymore.

I got into UMich LS&A school with a 3.81. Funny thing is that I'm probably only in the top third of my class...?
