First off, I have had my GBA Artic with the afterburner for about 2 years now. My SP just came in the mail today.

Well WOW..

I had seen the pictures but I wasn't prepared for how SMALL the unit actually is.

Fit and finish are great (platinum).. I am worried that the paint will wear over time though.

The screen is great, the front light works very well. Sometimes it does seem a *little* overpowering. I would have been nice to get a brightness adjustment.

It takes a couple minutes to get used to how to hold it, with the shoulder buttons in the back. After you do it is very comfortable.

The buttons feel the same as the original until you press them in. The have a more tactitle feel. Very nice.

The unit itself is VERY light. !!

When no cartridge is installed the bottom is left pretty open, this bothers be because of dust getting in. However, structurally even without a cartridge in it has no give/take.

The screen itself stays put very well. Very important since there is no latch to keep the unit closed or folded.

My 256mb Flash advance linker kit works fine. (I was worried about that)

Bottom line:

I think it is worth it. Even if you already have a GBA (and you use it!) The screen stayed protected when closed. You can actually put it in you pocket! If the rechargeable battery lasts as long as it is supposed to then it will definately save me $$$ and time. Definately looks more 'adult'. No matter how well you install the damn afterburner kit, dust always seems to get in!

Feel free to ask me any questions if you are on the fence about this great product. *time to bust out the castlevania game and appreciate it*

EDIT ==============PICTURES========================

is there anyway you can take pics of the GBA SP, while holding it? or in relation to the regular GBA?

don't worry, the pearlized color is molded so it will never come off.

Does it work in complete darkness now like the old game boys did with the big goofy light ad ons?

Good question. I have read the card scanner will work fine, I am not sure about the TV tuner.

I got my Flash Advance linker from Gamegizmo.com (they are actually in the US)
I use it mostly to demo games, because alot of them really suck ;)

Thanks for the heads-up about the plastic PipBoy. (fallout ref?)

Complete darkness is NOT a problem! Probably the best place to use the back light.

Check out the pictures in my original post.

What's that?

Something that allows you to debug ;) games on the GBA.

basically, it's a blank memory card that lets you load GBA roms you download from the internet.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the info.

Cool. Any pics of the GBA SP turned on?

Ack. Well with the crappy dig camera I have it doesn't pick it up at all.

It looks like the afterburner kit except not washed out and sometimes uneven. There are probably better pictures on the net of it.

Well, it came with a charge. I have it plugged in now. The battery light is a dummy light like the old one.

Green = looks good
red = save your rpg before you lose 5 hours of play

It will be awhile before I can really test it. I was surprised the battery had a charge at all.

could u save games on the 256 flash linker? like some RPG games need saving, so the next time you play it, it will put u where you are last played? i hope my question make sense.

Yes.

To manage my save games, I use a utility called 'little writer' instead of the normal one.. It makes it alot easier to save and restore games. That is how I played Golden Sun before I bought it.

I picked mine up yesterday, I didn't bother with the GBA, but this thing is great. I hope the TV tuner works with it as well since I have a long car ride coming up in April. I need to get more games.

I just got one yesterday too, and I have a few impressions (just my opinion, mind you, but I thought I'd share some less-than-favorable ones too).

I feel that the backlight (sidelight) doesn't light the entire screen evenly. It is lit from the bottom, and although the entire screen is illuninated, it is definitely brighter at the bottom.

In addition, with the light on, the colors are very washed out, and there is now no contrast control.

The size is actually larger than I expected from the pictures. Not that it's big (it isn't at all) but for some reason I thought it would be smaller.

When open, it feels very awkward to hold. Now I have big hands, but it definitely feels as if it was designed for 8 year old hands. Also, because it's a square, it feels very awkward to have your fingers on the L&R triggers, not natural like the GBA.

I don't like the fact that in order to use headphones you must buy the Nintendo adapter.

I had a GBA when they first came out (I bought it only to play Zelda and Castlevania) but quickly sold it when I realized it was virtually impossible to see the screen except under very specific lighting. With this unit, I have a feeling that I will play through those few games and then get rid of it.

So, anyway, there are some of my initial impressions, FWIW.

I bought mine tonight and I think it's pretty sweet. At first it felt awkward in my hands... but after playing Metroid Fusion for 2 hours straight, the GBA SP feels pretty comfortable. All I need now is a decent Tetris game. Tetris Worlds scored something like a 2 at gamespot.
