what is wrong with the .8s?

No, BUT.....
I did have a Prostar back in the good old days (same company) and it stunk to high heaven. POS laptops. Talking to people nowadays it seems they really havent gotten a whole lot better.

Why do people on AT like Dells so much? I hate them.
Great post with lots of facts and information to back up your conjecture.

my 2005 is great

It's great as a first panel, but if you have any better panels, you will think Dell panels BLOW.

I have a 2405 versus a Viewsonic VP191b (19") and I think the 2405 is a POS. I don't have backlighting issues either..

I think its because of the value. They took into account the fact that you could somewhat regularly get them for about half of what their competition sells for.

So, say the Dell is 75% as good in quality, but costs 50% less than it is a much better value.

In my own experience, the Dell monitors I've had have been great quality. I compared the 2405FPW I had for a short while to the Apple 23" CD, and the Dell was the equal in image quality, but I paid about $1000 less than what the Apple was going for at the time.

Another thing is the whole ignorance is bliss. There's a lot of people who are used to crappy quality stuff, and so going to a mediocre/good quality item is a very noticeable improvement, and they're very happy with it. Sure, if they used things that were much higher quality then they'd love them, but they're happy with what they got.

what other 24" widescreen can you nab for under a grand? It all depends on what you're doing...

anyway.. what about the pcmcia slot? collegue of mine claims the dell laptops are pretty picky in that they don't supply the right voltage much of the time (at least on the inpsiron level). anyone heard of this?

Core Duo T2300, 1GB 533, 100GB 5400, 7800 Go, WUXGA TrueLife, Intel pro NIC, and the Dell backpack carrying case.

Will open and give my impressions tonight. I'll also take pictures.

Wow, I'm amazed that 1920 x 1200 is so readable. I was worried, but it's a non-issue moving from 1280 x1024. It seems pretty clear that they are taking the lowest common denominators and applying the shrink there and then adding width to the page rather than stretching it..........therefore the text is 1024/1200 smaller or about 15%.

I'll do some more tinkering and post more impressions later. I need to part out my desktop rig asap though.....as this is going to be replacing it for personal use.

Considering that dell computers are completely customizable, how can you hate *them* unless you are referring to the manufacturer itself?

I'm not a Dell groupie by any means, but am impressed that they were able to deliver me the computer they did, for the price they did. IBM couldn't. Toshiba couldn't.

HP All the way.

LOL!!! Yeah, HP is WAAYYY better than Dell

Digdug, if it's not going anywhere, why didn't you get a desktop with a nice big LCD?

Hrm... okay I'll take your word for it. But the only HP products I think I'll ever buy are their printers. Not sure why I hate HP in all other respects, but I do! :D

HP Pavilion home PC's aren't that great. But their corporate PCs, PDA's, printers and laptops are very good.

Nothing but good experiences here.

Agreed. I think Dell CS is great. Maybe they had problems in the past, but they have been terrific when I've needed them!

I  my E1705!

Because I do tote it around every so often. If I go down to my parents' house - I'll bring it. A desktop replacement is a perfect option for the person who wants something that acts like a desktop but *can* be taken somewhere.
