I had a blood test about a year ago. Here's the rundown.
Total Cholesterol: 153
Triglycerides: 75
HDL: 71
LDL: 67
Risk: 0.22

My wife was the one that answered the phone for the results. The doctor's advice? "Just tell him to keep doing what he's been doing." Wife said, "He doesn't do anything!" My daily 1 hour dose of XBOX sure has been doing the trick. ;)

Bud, those are insane numbers.... do you eat bad food at all? Drink red wine? that might help :)

what is your nationality background
I had bloodwork done recenty and had very similar numbers (total chol was 141). I do eat pretty well for the most part, but I think cycling is what's really keeping things in check.

I had total chol of 145, both my ldl and hdl are really low :(

Had mine done recently: HDL 55 (35+ is good), LDL 101 (under 130 is good). Good overall, could improve a bit though.

I can really relate. I was hospitalized about four months ago with a bloodclot in the leg, part of which lodged itself in my lung. I was 22 when it happened also, and was leading a very destructive lifestyle. After listening to the Doctors I have been eating well and non-smoking for over three months, and my numbers are looking real good.

The change will seem quite drastic at first, but you will become accustomed to it and feel much better as a result of it. Good luck to ya!

Scottfern: what's the plan now? Obviously you need to change your diet, but have you thought about some kind of exercise?

Only eat whole grains. And replace any butter/margarine you eat with Smart Balance. And only cook with extra virgin olive oil. Only use olive oil / vinegar based dressings for salad.

Probably should consider taking an Omega 3/6/9 fatty acid complex. Need to get more good fats into your body to help flush out the bad fats.

Don't freak out dude. You don't want your cortisol level to go up and that will make things worse. Right now, you are at a very LOW risk of developing any complications since you are only 22. It takes yeaaars for a clot to form even from your bad results. If you were to be at risk now...your number would have to be 500+.

However, you are taking the right step in changing your lifestyle. Don't make it too drastic or you will get sick of it and return to your normal self.

Good luck.

I appreciate the Omega suggestion, SagaLore, any other supplement I could take to help bring down my cholesterol is more than appreciated. I am actually looking to take whatever I need to bring down my triglycerides. Well, I just ate a PB&J sandwich on wheat with a glass of water for lunch. How am I doing?

Well the gameplan is walk around our outdoor circle track on campus which is 50 feet from my gf's dorm. As well as drop the pop for water, and eat more wheat bread and more veggies, soups, and grilled chicken.

I have actually been quite depressd the past 5 months because of losing my father. My mental health has been very negative lately, and I think the diet has something to do with that as well. RavenShield, thanks for putting this into perspective. I have nothingto compare these results against, so I am not sure how to take them. I think I am going to see a counselor on campus so I can talk about losing my Dad. I actually made a thread about him back in April/March, but I am sure its archived now.

My best advice to you is to make your diet and exercise as enjoyable as possible so you stick with them.

Food: get cookbooks, be creative. I love to eat, and it's relatively easy to come up with stuff that's tasty and reasonably good for you. The super-strict grubs/nuts/berries approach will get old quickly.

Exercise: try things until you figure out something you really like. There are probably local clubs for just about anything from running to ultimate frisbee. Make it fun rather than a chore and you'll be way more likely to keep going back (see also: all the people that buy gym memberships and go twice a year).

Good luck. :)

you are only 22! dang.

Don't do anything drastic. Make slow minor changes over a long time, so your body adjusts and you can retain the good habits. If you put your body through a drastic change, your body will reject it more and you will suffer more for it.

My results:

Triglycerides: 300 (Normal<150) HORRIBLY HIGH
HDL cholesterol: 28 (Normal=40+) HORRIBLY LOW
LDL cholesterol: 107 (Normal<= 130) Good?

My liver counts
ALT: 94 (Normal=2-60) My father passed away in March from a fatty liver and this has me stressing now. However, this MAY be part of my crappy diet as well.

I am in complete shock and scared pretty much sh!tless. Things have got to change. I told my gf and she already wants to get on a diet so we better change fast. :(

I am only 22 btw.

My results from last week.

201 - Tri
39 - HDL
125 - LDL
204 - total

Wow. I'm 4" taller and 50 pounds lighter, and I still have to watch what I eat and work out every day. Lay off the junk and the weight should just fall off.

I think that's worse then mine, just got my blood work done last week. My liver was OK, but not by cholesterol.
Tri: 275
HDL: 35
LDL: 174

I'm 28, 5'10", 160lbs. I feel for you. I was reading the "what to avoid" list. Every item was like, yep, love that. The "what to eat list" was like, yep, hate that. My mom's cholesterol was above 400 at my age. In addition to eating healthy and exercising, she's been taken meds to help and she manages to stay under 200 most of the time. Her brother was the same way, but didn't do anything about it. 5 open heart surgeries later, he was dead before he hit 40. Good luck!
